Twitter Is Using Its New Auto-Translation Feature to Make Sense of the Crisis in Egypt

Twitter is putting its new translation feature to good use by relying on it to translate popular or important tweets into a user's own language. The feature makes it a lot easier to follow the conversation around the world or, at the very least, to get an idea of what's happening in other countries.

Case in point, Twitter used the feature to translate the tweets of the now ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi.

Twitter was a powerful tool during the Arab Spring and particularly in the Egypt protests, which got the most attention around the world.

But things haven't been quiet in Egypt since the former dictator Hosni Mubarak was removed from power two years ago. In fact, things seem to be getting worse.

Twitter's automated translation feature, powered by Microsoft's Bing, is still experimental and, though Twitter has confirmed its existence, it hasn't made any big announcement. Still, the company did provide a list of Egyptian accounts, 63 of them, for which the automated translation has been enabled.
