London Welsh will be allowed to play in the Aviva Premiership next season

By Daily Express reporter

LONDON WELSH will, after all, be allowed to play in the Aviva Premiership next season after successfully appealing the initial decision by the RFU to reject their application.

The Championship winners, who will play their home games in Oxford?s Kassam Stadium, eventually persuaded an appeals panel they did satisfy ground eligibility criteria. London Welsh beat Cornish Pirates in the Championship play-off final but it was deemed that their Old Deer Park ground did not meet Premiership requirements.

It means Dean Richards will make his return to rugby after a three-year ban following the Bloodgate saga in the second tier of English rugby, with his new club Newcastle relegated from the Premiership.

Iconic Atari turns 40, tries to stay relevant

(AP) ? A scruffy, young Steve Jobs worked at Atari before he founded Apple. "Pong," one of the world's first video games, was born there, as was "Centipede," a classic from the era of quarter-guzzling arcade machines. "Call of Duty" creator Activision was started by four of Atari's former game developers.

The iconic video game company turns 40 years old this week, much slimmer these days as it tries to stay relevant in the age of "Angry Birds" and "Words With Friends."

But Atari's influence on today's video games is pervasive.

Although it wasn't the first company to make video games, Atari was the first to make a lasting impression on an entire generation. At arcades ? or at video game bars such as Barcade in the trendy Williamsburg section of Brooklyn ? nostalgic patrons still gather around such Atari classics as "Asteroids," ''Joust" and "Centipede."

The Atari 2600, launched in 1977, was the first video game console in millions of homes, long before the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985), Sony's PlayStation (1994) and Microsoft's Xbox (2001).

Today's younger iPhone gamers might not remember how "Pong," that simple, two-dimensional riff on Ping-Pong, swept across living rooms and arcades in the 1970s. But they might recognize elements of it in easy-to-learn, hard-to-master games based on simple physics ? among them, "Angry Birds."

"For tens of millions of Gen X-ers, or kids who grew up in America in the '70s and '80s, Atari is a cultural icon, an intrinsic part of childhood," says Scott Steinberg, tech analyst and author of "The Modern Parent's Guide to Kids and Video Games."

"Pong," he adds, was in some ways the very first social video game, one designed to play in bars, at home or at an arcade, while spectators crowded around to watch the action.

Launched in 1972 from Atari's Silicon Valley headquarters, "Pong" featured a basic black-and-white screen (that's black and white only, no shades of gray here), divided by a dotted line. Short white lines on either side stood in for paddles. Two players controlled them and tried to get a moving dot ? the ball ? past their opponent.

With "Pong," Atari introduced video games to the masses just as Apple and Microsoft ushered in the personal computer era by bringing computers to people's desktops in the 1980s.

"It makes me think that I am getting really old," says Nolan Bushnell, the co-founder of Atari. "I'm 69, which means I was 29 when I founded Atari. It seems really young in retrospect."

It doesn't take much effort these days to see 20-something entrepreneurs in technology. Mark Zuckerberg was just 19 when he started Facebook in his Harvard dorm room. But back in the early '70s, Bushnell said, "no one in their 20s started companies. In some ways it paved the way for Apple, Microsoft and those guys."

Bushnell said Atari succeeded early on because it nurtured ideas from its engineers and computer programmers.

"We dominated not because of our manufacturing and marketing prowess but because of creativity," Bushnell says. "The lasting legacy: That creativity is a real weapon. And in some ways Apple has shown that as well."

Jobs was just 19 when Atari hired him as a technician, making $5 an hour. He worked the night shift because many of his co-workers didn't get along with him and didn't appreciate his refusal to wear deodorant, according to Walter Isaacson's recent biography of the late Apple chief executive.

He wasn't there for long ? he left the company in 1974 to travel to India and co-founded Apple two years later, in 1976.

Dona Bailey, one of the creators of "Centipede," recalls a notebook that Atari had with maybe 30 ideas for games in it.

"Most of them were laser games," says Bailey, who was the only female programmer in Atari's arcade division when she was hired in 1980 and when she left in 1982. "I wasn't really interested in war, or lasering anything, or violence."

The only ideas in the notebook that didn't have to do with "lasering things or frying things" were two sentences about a multi-segmented insect that walks out on the screen and winds its way down the screen toward the player, she says. There was implicit shooting, as the player at the bottom had to destroy the insect before getting hit by it, but "it didn't seem that bad to shoot a bug."

Thus, "Centipede" was born.

Atari, Steinberg says, pioneered a lot of the concepts that are popular in gaming today: Games should be for both men and women, and they should be social by allowing many people to compete with each other.

Atari "defined games as not just a product but a social movement," Steinberg says.

But there is a generational divide. For kids born in the '80s and later, Atari elicits a respectful nod as a retro video game icon at best ? and a clueless shrug at worst.

"It may rise again, but it remains to be seen whether Atari's place is among retail giants (such as) Activision and Electronic Arts," Steinberg says, "Or in a future that is defined by its own past."

Activision, which now makes such hit games as "Call of Duty" and "Diablo III," was founded in 1979 by four disgruntled Atari game designers who wanted more recognition for their work.

As Activision's future rose, Atari's faltered. Having cemented video games as a form of mass entertainment, Atari was sold to Warner Communications Inc. in 1976 and began to pile up big losses.

Warner, now part of Time Warner Inc., discontinued the Atari 2600 and fired Bushnell, says Stephen Jacobs, professor of interactive games and media at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.

Meanwhile, several companies tried to capitalize on Atari's success, but flooded the market with terrible products. It was a gold rush, with little gold to be had.

Atari contributed to that decline in quality with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," still considered one of the worst video games ever made ? and that's being generous.

"They tried to push something out in six weeks," Jacobs says. "They pushed out a million units of a horrible game that they were sure was just going to be the bomb. And it ended up tanking Atari."

That was the Christmas of 1982. What followed is now referred to as the "great video game crash of 1983." People stopped buying video games.

Companies began collapsing and Atari was soon sold to a man named Jack Tramiel. Over the next decade, Atari made computers, a game console called Jaguar and a handheld game machine called the Lynx. None were hits.

Atari was then passed to the toy company Hasbro, then to Infogrames Entertainment, a French company that owns it today.

Recognizing the promise of mobile devices and its best-known titles, Atari today makes such phone games as "Centipede: Origins" and "Breakout Boost," a take on the game Steve Jobs worked on back in the day.

"The legacy is that Atari is essentially where it all began," says Jim Wilson, the company's current CEO.

So is Atari living off its legacy?

"To a certain point almost all entertainment companies are doing a bunch of living on their legacy. That's why we have 'sequel-itis' in triple-A games, movies, books," Jacobs says. "Why invest in new things when you can beat the old things to death and still make money out of them?"

Webmaster Complains About Panda But Scrapes Google Play Content

Google Play ScrapI am not sure if this is funny or really sad. I spotted a thread at the Google Webmaster Help forums where a webmaster was asking how can he recover from being hit by the Panda algorithm.

So Google's John Mueller recommends he create "unique, compelling, and high-quality content." But then he goes on so John takes a deeper look and asks why is he stealing and scraping the content off Google Play when it is against the terms of service of Google Play.

John said:

Additionally, it looks like you may be scraping the content from Google Play -- are you aware of the terms of service there? For example on http://play.google.com/about/terms.html it mentions "You agree not to access (or attempt to access) Google Play by any means other than through the interface that is provided by Google, unless you have been specifically allowed to do so in a separate agreement with Google. You specifically agree not to access (or attempt to access) Google Play through any automated means (including use of scripts, crawlers, or similar technologies) (...)"

I don't know if I find this sad or funny.

(1) Panda is made to take sites that are just repurposing content without adding any value add.

(2) This guy is taking Google's own content to try to rank.

Rosiglitazone and AS601245 Decrease Cell Adhesion and Migration through Modulation of Specific Gene Expression in Human Colon Cancer Cells

by Angelo Cerbone, Cristina Toaldo, Rosalba Minelli, Eric Ciamporcero, Stefania Pizzimenti, Piergiorgio Pettazzoni, Guglielmo Roma, Mario Umberto Dianzani, Chiara Ullio, Carlo Ferretti, Chiara Dianzani, Giuseppina Barrera

PPARs are nuclear receptors activated by ligands. Activation of PPAR? leads to a reduction of adhesion and motility in some cancer models. PPAR? transcriptional activity can be negatively regulated by JNK-mediated phosphorylation. We postulated that the use of agents able to inhibit JNK activity could increase the effectiveness of PPAR? ligands. We analysed the effects of rosiglitazone (PPAR? ligand) and AS601245 (a selective JNK inhibitor) alone or in association on adhesion and migration of CaCo-2, HT29, and SW480 human colon cancer cells and investigated, through microarray analysis, the genes involved in these processes. Cell adhesion and migration was strongly inhibited by rosiglitazone and AS601245. Combined treatment with the two compounds resulted in a greater reduction of the adhesion and migration capacity. Affymetrix analysis in CaCo-2 cells revealed that some genes which were highly modulated by the combined treatment could be involved in these biological responses. Rosiglitazone, AS601245 and combined treatment down-regulated the expression of fibrinogen chains in all three cell lines. Moreover, rosiglitazone, alone or in association with AS601245, caused a decrease in the fibrinogen release. ARHGEF7/?-PIX gene was highly down-regulated by combined treatment, and western blot analysis revealed that ?-PIX protein is down-modulated in CaCo-2, HT29 and SW480 cells, also. Transfection of cells with ?-PIX gene completely abrogated the inhibitory effect on cell migration, determined by rosiglitazone, AS601245 and combined treatment. Results demonstrated that ?-PIX protein is involved in the inhibition of cell migration and sustaining the positive interaction between PPAR? ligands and anti-inflammatory agents in humans.

Working Jelly Bean build available for Verizon, GSM Galaxy Nexus

Android Central

Well, that didn't take very long: our crafty friends over at RootzWiki have already brought the I/O Android 4.1 preview build to both the GSM and Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Forum member B16's original GSM dump, followed by jdkoreclipse's VZW versison, have been tinkered with throughout the night and appear to be working quite well. It's flashable through Recovery after a wipe and a cleared cache, though as always we suggest you backup before playing around. After spending the morning snacking on Jelly Bean I can report that the Verizon build is near perfection, with even LTE working beautifully. As always, bugs are possible, especially since this is merely a preview build. If you've got the guts and the sweettooth, download links can be found at the source.

Martin Tremblay, a minor league youth hockey coach, has been arrested for purposely tripping a a 13-year old opponent of his team.

According to reports, the incident took place on Saturday, June 23 after a youth hockey game between two teams from Vancouver and Richmond, at at Thunderbird Arena on the University of British Columbia campus

After the game, the teams lined up to shake hands with the coaches following on the back of the line, as it is traditionally done.

As Tremblay, the coach for the UBC Hornets, the team that won the game, approached the two players from the opposing team, the Richmond Steel, he kicked his leg out and tripped them up.

Both players fell, with one of the boys sustaining a serious wrist injury as he fell and hit the ice, a local Vancouver news outlet reports.

The incident has caused mass outrage towards the coach who can be seen on a YouTube video that shows the full incident, including the coach apparently giving the middle finger towards to tripped-up child.

According to Canadian Press, Sergeant Paulena Gidda of the UBC RCMP detachment said the incident was witnessed by parents, spectators and other players and police were called.

"The coach was arrested. Charges will be forwarded at a later date, pending the results of the investigation." Gidda told the Canadian Press. "It was an incident that was unfortunate, and it doesn't bring a great light to our community."

Lucie McNeill, UBC's director of public affairs told TheStar that she has seen the video and talked to staff about the incident.

"It's really disturbing and of concern when something like this happens anywhere," she said. "Our staff works hard to provide a safe environment for recreational sports to happen."

Google+ SDK for Android and iOS is coming, along with a handful of APIs

Google+

Google has made it clear at Google I/O -- they love Google+ and are going full steam ahead with the social platform. We don't blame them, as we think with the right nurturing it can stand out among the rest. What's been sorely missing is options for third party applications to integrate with G+ as the do with Facebook and Twitter. Google has made that one step closer to reality today with the announcement of the upcoming Google+ API for Android and iOS. Based on the platform notes, supported out-of-the-box are Google+ sign-in, a share plug-in to share your app content to the G+ stream,  +1 button integration, Google+ history functions, and a personalization feature, which will allow developers to pull in public G+ content and use it in their app.

It's not exactly perfect, but it's very close to what everyone was asking for. Now we just need to see the SDK and some apps built with it.

Good life for McConaughey as husband, stripper

By Randee Dawn

June has been a very good month for Matthew McConaughey. He started out the month getting married to his long-time love (and mother of his two children) Camila Alves, and he rounds out the same month with the opening of his new film about male strippers, "Magic Mike."

But he admits that there was a little trepidation when he proposed to Alves last Christmas: "She didn't say yes right away!" he told TODAY's Ann Curry on Thursday. "'Yes' was not the first word out of her mouth. It took about 30 seconds.... She says she was shocked."

Obviously the right words did come out, because the two married on June 9, with son Levi as ring-bearer and daughter Vida as the flower girl. "I don't think she dropped one petal," said the proud papa.?

Lately McConaughey has been learning something other than how to be a husband -- he's been practicing his stripper moves for "Mike." In the film, he plays a club owner and former stripper Dallas, who "believes he is sort of the messiah of the male revue universe," explained the actor. "This subculture, male strippers in this world, it's very carny, almost cheesy world."

Stripping for the camera, he admitted, was something of a rush: "After you get into it and it starts to work, it sort of becomes very fun. Then when it's over three minutes later, and everyone's on the ground laughing, including myself, you want to do it again.... It's a hoot. You're on a stage -- it's rock star stuff."

Still, he admitted: "I'm probably done with public displays of stripping."

So overall, life is on a roll for the easygoing actor, who said, "(My life) is healthy. Personal life is good, career feels good ... and we'll just keep on cultivating."

"Magic Mike" is in theaters as of June 29.

Will you go see 'Magic Mike'?

What hunk are you most looking forward to seeing in "Magic Mike"? Let us know on Facebook!

Google Plays Up Nexus 7 Tablet Gaming Chops | Kotaku Australia

?Who said mobile gaming has to be casual?? quipped Google?s engineering director, Chris Yerga, at the company?s launch of its first ever tablet this morning. I wouldn?t go quite that far, but the 7-inch (1280 x 800) handheld does have attractive mobile gaming specs: a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, gyroscope, accelerometer, and a 12-core graphics chip. At $249 in Australia next month, can you see yourself on the train with one instead of, say, a ~$349 PS Vita? Watch the Nexus 7 in action?

Video not working? click here.

Obviously the two machines are very different beasts. Google?s tablet is pretty much a blown up Android phone (with all the multi-function benefits and touchscreen gaming cons that go with that), and I?m sure you already have one of those anyway. And it looks like those 12 GPU cores aren?t exactly physical; just shader cores (though seriously feel free to correct me if I have that bass ackward). My most lingering impression really, is that Google has gone super competitive with that pricing. And Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) looks like a slick update to the Android OS.

In the video above, Yerga demonstrates Horn from Phosphor Games, who you might remember from the beautiful iPhone action/RPG Dark Meadow. Though Yerga doesn?t actually call Horn an Infinity Blade killer, he gushes that it?s ?a detailed world with the kind of environment never before seen on a mobile device. We?ve got lens flares, environmental effects and even individually rendered leaves on the trees.? Is it the kind of experience that until recently you would not have seen outside of a dedicated gaming console? Check out the refracting water droplets in the Dead Trigger demo in the video and let us know what you think in the comments.

Android favourite Gameloft is already on board also. The company will be optimising 10 titles for the Nexus 7, including upcoming games Asphalt 7 and The Amazing Spider-Man. No word yet on Dark Knight Rises though.

Helpful Guidelines and Tips on Security and Surveillance Systems ...

Posted on 27. Jun, 2012 by freddy in business | No Comments

During the past few years, home and business security and surveillance systems have really become very technological. Thought-provoking developments in materials, features and wireless technology have made hard wired alarms and surveillance systems pretty useless. However, there are so many different things to purchase and unique applications to use that you must either hire a personal assistant or learn about these things by yourself. We will help you to suggesting many things that you should keep in mind while you are shopping around for security and surveillance systems for your home or office.

If you have a business, it would really be a good thing if you were to install a security and surveillance system. You can save about 22 percent on your business insurance if you install a monitoring system. Obviously, you will have to verify that you have the system in your company, but this will not be too hard to do. You probably are already aware that many insurance companies require some type of security system for security reasons. So, perhaps, if your current insurance company does not have this requirement, you may be able to save by switching companies. Be confident in your choice of surveillance and security system. Video is an integral aspect of all security systems; not necessarily the alarm component, though. But, you should research all application because you might be able to find a cheaply priced hidden camera for around four to five hundred dollars. If you have special applications for video, then that is another aspect to consider as well. There are some cameras that operate at their best when they have an operator. These types of surveillance and security cameras can cost you as must as five thousand dollars. So make sure you know what you are buying because you might get an item that is expensive and you don?t really need it.

If you are thinking about getting a system upgrade or want to get a new system, do not get a system that has a duress signal feature. What this means is that you have another code that you can enter into the system to turn it off, but the duress code calls another monitoring unit to say that you are being made to disable the alarm. Think about it, there can be a situation in which this is a realistic scenario in today?s world.

In the world today, it does not matter if you want a system for you home of office because with the options available on the market, you can find coverage with a ton of good security. Just like other industries, the creators are always trying to do better than the other by making systems that have more technological features. Plus, there are so many newer areas of security, surveillance, and general monitoring capabilities that did not exist just a few short years ago. You will also see that there are businesses that are really trying to obtain your business. What this means is that this kind of competition will be beneficial for you.

Baby chimp mauled to death in front of LA zoo visitors

By Andrew Mach, msnbc.com

An adult chimpanzee mauled a baby chimp to death Tuesday inside their exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo in front of a crowd of visitors, zoo officials said.

The 3-month-old chimp was the first to be born at the zoo habitat in 13 years, and she was gradually being introduced to the coed troop of 15 adults when an adult male chimpanzee fatally injured her in their habitat, zoo spokesperson Jason Jacobs said in a statement.

Los Angeles Zoo

Gracie, a chimp at the Los Angeles Zoo, holds her baby. The unnamed infant was mauled to death by an adult male chimp Tuesday.

The unnamed infant was born in early March to a chimp at the zoo named Gracie, who ?had proven to be a caring mother,? the zoo said. Gracie was allowed to keep the chimp overnight to grieve her loss. ?

Zoo staff didn?t witness the attack, but said it happened in front of a crowd of visitors.

?I did talk to a couple of visitors as I was coming up here, tried to help them process what they had seen,? Director John Lewis told NBCLosAngeles.com. ?We also had some other visitors help us get a better understanding.?

Deputy Director Denis Verret said grief counseling was made available for visitors and staff.

Zoo officials said acts of aggression among the troop of chimps were not expected.

?Everything that we saw has been positive, all the chimps have been very interested, wanting to either be close to, or touch the baby,? Jennie Becker, the zoo?s curator of mammals, told KCAL-TV.

Male chimpanzees are well known for violence, including the killing of the young. Scientists speculate that clashes over stomping grounds might fuel these conflicts, and the human encroachment on chimpanzee territory, such as in zoo environments, may exacerbate them.

Studies and observations in recent years have also shown that male chimpanzees often attack the infants of rival chimps both in the wild and in captivity, especially if a desired female is involved, according to zoo officials.

?Chimpanzee behavior can sometimes be aggressive and violent and the zoo is sorry that visitors had to be exposed to this,? Jacobs said. ?This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss for the zoo and especially for the Great Ape Team who have worked diligently to care for the infant and its mother since birth.?

Zoo officials were still investigating the circumstances behind the attack but said they may need to consider changing their approach to new arrivals.

?We?re going to have to consider, at what age maybe we introduce babies to the group,? Becker said. ?I didn?t think that this was going to be a problem. These are all experienced, social chimps.?

The zoo in Griffith Park houses on of the nation?s largest troops of chimpanzee ? 15 in all ? in a North American zoo, officials said.?

Social Planet Marketing Solutions: Customer Service that Rocks ...

It's not everyday a major publisher approaches you to write a book, unless you're Becky Carroll that is. It was Becky's blog, a blog she started writing in 2006, that captured a certain business publisher's attention. What was Becky writing about? Most of what she blogged about was what makes for outstanding customer service-- not rocket science even by Becky's confession but something so key to successful business that book publisher, Wiley took notice.

Social Planet had the privilege of meeting with Becky about her book, The Hidden Power of Your Customers, to uncover Becky's hidden power.

Spend Marketing Dollars on Existing Customers
Observing that her Fortune 100 clients and most businesses spent the majority of their marketing efforts on the acquisition of new customers, it dawned on Becky that little was being done for the old customer and left her wondering why was it that only new customers get the special deals. What about those who have bought your product and continue to buy your product over and over again?

From Becky Carroll's experience, it's a shift in thinking in a core business model, to focusing effort on their existing customer base, that businesses begin to unleash the "hidden power" of their customers and create a backdrop for the kind of sought-after, word of mouth customer experience that gets shared over and over again. Businesses need to invest in the customers they already have. Value them, recognize them, thank them, reward them. Extend your best services to them. That all-too-common tendency to forget a customer once you have gained the sale is exactly what you should not do if you expect substantial and sustained growth in a thriving business, according to Becky.

Use Social Media Throughout the Entire Enterprise
Customer service has never been so paramount for businesses today. With access to a worldwide publishing platform through social media and technology, the venting of bad customer experiences is only a few characters away. There's a renewed urgency for customer service to be amazing, and in fact if it's not, the whole world will hear about it.

Businesses can utilize social media to accomplish some very important marketing functions across the board: market research, thanking the customer, listening to the customer, resolving complaints and giving businesses the opportunity to make raving fans. According to Becky, social media strategy is really more about a having a relationship strategy in place. Businesses that do, will stand apart from the rest.

Rock Customer Service by Being Proactive
To rock your customers' world, Becky offers 4 key strategies, which make up the acronym ROCK:?Relevant marketing, Orchestrated experience, Customer-Focused culture and Killer customer service.

And the only way to achieve a customer service model that rocks, you have to place your existing customers at the center of everything you do as a business. This kind of customer-centric focus is methodical, thought-out, well-intentioned, calculated even for the times when the unexpected arises. In Becky's words, "You can't leave a customer experience to chance."?From the first time your customers think of you to the time they recycle your product, the entire customer experience must meet the customer at every touch point in the customer's life cycle.

Treat Your Customers and Employees as Assets
Companies that value and nurture their current customers get fans to talk and share, ?buy more, and infectiously influence others. Becky gives the example of Harley Davidson, an iconic company with cult-like status to motorcycle enthusiasts, that has seen its stock value increase over 120% over the last 3 years. What percentage of Harley Davidson's marketing budget is spent on its existing customer base? A recent figure says 88 percent.

It comes as no surprise that companies with a customer-focused culture, those that provide this kind of talked-about, remarkable customer service, also tend to be the very same companies that value their employees as assets, and it's this deep respect for people and relationships at the core of businesses that unlocks a customer's hidden power as brand advocates and turns them into raving fans.

Consumer confidence down for 4th month in row

By Reuters

Consumer confidence fell for the fourth straight month to its lowest level since January, and the consumer expectations index was at its lowest level since November, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes fell to 62.0 from a downwardly revised 64.4 the month before. Economists had expected a reading of 63.5, according to a Reuters poll. May was originally reported as 64.9.

"It was lower than expected. This reinforces the general tone we are seeing in a lot of consumer indexes. This one in particular has now fallen for four consecutive months, which is rather disappointing," said economist Sean Incremona of 4cast Ltd. He said it reinforces the idea that confidence continues to slip and that's is likely to keep pressure on the economy.

"The improvement in the Present Situation Index, coupled with a moderate softening in consumer expectations, suggests there will be little change in the pace of economic activity in the near-term," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

The expectations index dropped five points, to 72.3 from 77.3, while the present situation index edged up slightly to 46.6 from 44.9 last month.

Consumers' labor market assessment was mixed, but income expectations fell, suggesting that the consumer spending that has kept the economy afloat may not last. The "jobs hard to get" category increased to 41.5 percent from 40.9 percent the month before, while "jobs plentiful" rose slightly to 7.8 percent from 7.5 percent.

Consumers also felt better about price increases with expectations for inflation in the coming 12 months down to 5.3 percent from 5.6 percent.

CNBC's Rick Santelli reports June's Consumer Confidence fell to 62.0 in June, versus 64.4 in May.

Tens of thousands flee raging Colo. wildfire

COLORADO SPRINGS (Reuters) - A wildfire raging near some of Colorado's most popular tourist sites grew suddenly more ferocious on Tuesday, forcing 32,000 people from their homes, prompting evacuations from the U.S. Air Force Academy and swallowing numerous houses at the edge of Colorado Springs.

From the vantage point of a command post about 10 miles from the path of advancing flames, the entire community of Mountain Shadows, a northwest subdivision, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow after dark.

"This is a fire of epic proportions," Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said as ash drifted down on the city, sirens wailed and the thick smell of smoke permeated the air.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper flew into the city Tuesday night by helicopter to meet with fire commanders and tour the fire zone first-hand. He noted that the blaze was one of at least a dozen burning throughout the state. Four people have died in Colorado wildfires so far this year.

"This is the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," he said during an impromptu news conference, adding that from the air he saw many homes destroyed in a glowing landscape that looked "surreal."

The Waldo Canyon Fire, which has roared through at least 6,200 acres of dry timber since Saturday, has grabbed attention for days because of its proximity to landmarks like the famed mountaintop of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy.

The blaze claimed its first property losses on Tuesday as wind-driven flames swept over containment lines into Colorado's second-most populous city, consuming an unknown number of homes on the town's outskirts as authorities hurried to evacuate residents.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said 32,000 people had been evacuated, and an Air Force Academy spokesman said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on academy grounds housing civilian and military personnel and their families.

"We are in a very critical situation now. Unfortunately we do have structures and homes that are burning in the northwest corner of Colorado Springs. We have mandatory evacuation over a considerable area," fire information officer Rob Deyerberg told Reuters.

A mushroom cloud of gray, black and brown smoke, topped by billowing, white cumulus clouds, rose nearly 20,000 feet into the sky and hung over the area as residents scrambled to heed evacuation orders.

The sudden closure of service stations along with other businesses, leaving fleeing motorists unable to fill up their cars, added to a sense of urgency as roads filled with traffic.

Columns of vehicles carrying evacuees and hastily packed belongings stretched bumper-to-bumper for miles, crawling slowly southward out of town along Interstate 25.

Closer to the blaze, which has been fanned by winds blowing into the southern Rockies from the prairies to the east, trees were visibly twisting from the heat of the flames.

"It's a very hostile environment out there," fire information officer Anne Rys-Sikora said.

Asked how quickly the fire was spreading after the latest flare-up on Tuesday afternoon, incident commander Rich Harvey said, "If I gave acreage right now, it would be wrong in five minutes. It's growing."

Hickenlooper said he was consulting with Pentagon officials. The Air Force Academy issued a statement saying the military was preparing to dispatch up to 25 more helicopters to join the firefighting effort.

Authorities earlier said that half of the fleet of eight Air Force C-130 cargo planes equipped as air tankers were already at work, dropping flame-retardant chemicals over the blaze.

DEATH IN UTAH

Still, the Waldo Canyon Fire, burning primarily within the Pike National Forest on the western fringe of Colorado City, was dwarfed in size by wildfires elsewhere across the state, and by a fatal blaze that flared with renewed intensity in Utah.

Authorities said on Tuesday a body was found in the ashes the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched over 39,000 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheat grass and sagebrush.

Flames fanned by high winds into a second county forced the closure of Utah's state Route 89 for a second time and prompted the evacuation of the entire town Fairview, a community of more than 1,200 residents according to the latest census, state emergency managers said.

The blaze already has leveled an estimated 30 homes and killed 75 sheep, authorities said.

The Wood Hollow Fire is believed to be one of just two western wildfires that have claimed lives in recent weeks.

The other is the High Park Fire near Fort Collins, Colorado, south of Denver, which now ranks as that state's second-largest blaze on record and its most destructive ever, having consumed 87,250 acres in steep mountain canyons since it was sparked by lightning two weeks ago.

The High Park has destroyed 248 homes and killed a 62-year-old grandmother, whose body was found in the ashes of her cabin, while leaving an estimated 4,300 residents displaced by evacuations.

Colorado accounts for several of the 29 large active wildfires being fought across the country on Tuesday. The bulk of them were in seven western states -- Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona and California, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.
