Moto X compared to the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4 and more in new photo

Moto X compared to the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4 and more in new photo

With only a few more days of waiting before Motorola and Google take the covers off their new Moto X phone, we?re getting one more leak this afternoon. The device will officially be unveiled on August 1st, but below we have a leaked photo showing the size of the device in comparison to some other flagship devices, as well as the old original DROID RAZR.

moto-x-size

We know basically all there is to know about this smartphone by now, and this leak comes to us from Taylor Wimberly, who?s been leaking info almost daily about this phone. He surely has his sources, and has been accurate all month long, so this looks pretty legit. Even if the on-screen buttons don?t look right, and have the old Motorola navigation buttons and all.

So, back to the leaked image. We?re getting a size comparison with the 4-inch iPhone 5, the 4.3-inch Motorola DROID RAZR, and the 4.99-inch Galaxy S4. All stacking up quite nicely next to the Moto X. If you weren?t sure before, this 4.7-inch smartphone comes in a pretty sleek and small package, and is looking better by the day.

One of the key selling points come Thursday will be the fact that the edge-to-edge display allows for a big, bright, and beautiful HD display without making the phone huge. It?s smaller than the 4.3-inch RAZR, and barely bigger than the iPhone 5. Even with a much bigger display. Add in Android 4.3 (hopefully) Jelly Bean, a blazing fast and efficient Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM, and their brand new 10 megapixel ?clear pixel? camera.

We?re not sure exactly where this image came from. Whether that be Moto themselves, or someone who made the nice graphic, but we appreciate getting another look as we all sit around waiting for Thursday to arrive. As a reminder, the event is late Thursday night, and we?ll be there live!

A Low Roller Guide to Poker in London - (PTP News Feed)

A Low Roller Guide to Poker in London

This series will bring you paired guides to the world?s true poker capitals, a high roller and low roller guide, providing the full spread of low-downs on how to ball it poker-style, be it high or lowball. We?ll start the series with a low roller guide to London.

LONDON LOW ROLLER GUIDE

London, freaking expensive European capital of stinking wealth. You really have to watch your wallet here if you?re not rolling in cash ?cause this city will eat your money without pausing for breath. It?s a beautiful, rich, dirty capital of capital and it?s up to you to survive in it and enjoy it. Even the locals complain about the prices, in a city where cheap drinks will cost you twice what they do an hour?s ride out of town. It gets away with it all by being a hell of a lot of fun.

The games

A great selection of games exist for the small to midstakes player. Cash games a-plenty can be found from ?1 ? ?1 at?The Vic?, the Victoria Grosvenor Casino. The Empire in Leicester Square, reputedly host to the softest cash games in the capital, also runs cash games through the night starting at ?1 ? ?2 with a ?50 minimum.

Many casinos and poker rooms exist across London, and sites such as The London Poker Guide can be of help in sifting through your options, or indeed in picking a tournament to take part in last minute.

I say last minute, while in fact you must be careful in London to pre-register with ID at many poker venues some time before attending, often 24 hours before. Just phone up before fixing your plans, to find out whether a particular casino or poker room requires this.

If you fancy trying to satellite into a live event running in the capital, London is host to its own leg of the EPT, to the GUKPT, the WPT and the UKIPT (United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour) Grand Final each year.

To eat

There are some amazing options in London that won?t kill your roll. I?ll give you the lowdown on a few of them here.

If you?re after cuisine with a kick, and want something authentic, try Mestizo for a great Mexican experience. Just a little north of the centre, three minutes walk from the nearest underground station and it?s the real deal.

Dishoom will provide you with some premium Indian cuisine in the heart of central London, Covent Garden. As spicy as its Mexican counterpart but from the other side of the world, both these cuisines are immensely popular across the UK.

Forget those chain fast food outlets, Patty and Bun in Bond Street is where it?s at for burgers in London. You?ll mind the queues less once you bite into one.

If you?re on a serious budget, you can move it a big notch down and focus on the food for a fiver approach. Some pubs offer very decent offers on certain days of the week, and Chinatown, right next to Leicester Square, is beautifully cheap and full of buffets (some of which are all you can eat!).

Talking of budget food, be sure to try out some of the numerous all day breakfasts available in London on literally every corner. Some are divine, some hideous. It all depends on the quality of meat used, and other ingredients.

In case you?re unfamiliar, the standard fare in a full English breakfast includes sausages, bacon, mushrooms, beans, toast, tomatoes and frequently chips, black pudding (basically dried blood ? avoid if not hugely carnivorous!) and hash browns. You won?t need lunch after one of these!

Going out

If clubbing?s your thing, you?re going to like London. One club which gets a lot of press in London is Fabric, a large venue running three rooms of beats throughout the night. Trips to Fabric tend to be marathon affairs so be prepared for an all-nighter.

The Ministry of Sound, a legendary institution, also runs its own club in London. You can get a taste of this club without even attending, as they run a ?live from the club? radio on the website.

Shamelessly stealing its name from an enlightened being, funkybuddha is a very hip venue doing well in central London and worth a look.

If you?d rather navigate your own way through the capital, TimeOut London, probably the most popular information hub on the capital, can provide excellent guidance.

To stay

For some serious value for money, check out some of these options.

With a very central location, great ratings and rooms from ?50 a night, the Ridgemount hotel is a fine option. Her Majesty Hotel prides itself on providing top notch accommodation, in particular to business travellers, and is priced in the same range.

For something a little extravagant without the price tag, lastminute.com offers an interesting service. They will provide you with a room in a five star hotel, but the hotel itself and location (within London) will remain a mystery until the day of your check in. Known as the ?secret hotel? service, this proves a real winner with those who don?t mind too much about which part of the city they bed down in, and you pay amazingly low rates for five star accommodation.

To relax

I?m not talking about sight-seeing. Sight-seeing is not relaxing, whether it?s crammed into a tour bus or rushing around the bridges of central London with a million other malcontents. I?m talking about peace, however contradictory that might sound in London.

?**** Take a walk in one of the massive parks of the capital, totally free of charge. I recommend Hyde Park, Regent?s Park and Green Park as fine options.

?**** If you want to go further into nature in the city, take a visit to Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. Host to thousands of species of plant, this is really a very special place. It?s not free, but it?s well worth the entry fee of ?14.50.

?**** Go relax in one of London?s many spas.

Palermo's Pizza agrees to rehire 8 workers, set union election

Palermo's Pizza, the scene of a year-long worker dispute, said Tuesday it has agreed to rehire eight workers with back pay and has asked the National Labor Relations Board to set a date for a union election.

"We have reluctantly agreed to this settlement, despite believing that the facts strongly support our position," Palermo President and CEO Giacomo Fallucca said in a statement.

Rather than continue to draw out the process and go to court, Fallucca said, the company agrees to the settlement "with reservation so that an election can take place." He said the company did not admit any fault in making the negotaited settlement.

As part of the settlement, eight of 116 former workers will be rehired and receive back pay. One of the eight has already been rehired and returned to work late last year.

The NLRB ruled earlier this year that did Palermo not violate labor relations laws when it fired 75 workers last year as part of an immigration audit, and did not use the audit as retaliation for efforts to unionize the plant.

The decision by the NLRB's Office of the General Counsel in Washington denies an appeal filed by the Palermo Workers Union, working with Voces de la Frontera, alleging unfair labor practices by Palermo's. The organizations claimed the company fired workers in retaliation for union-organizing efforts.

However, the NLRB has also ruled that Palermo's unlawfully fired nine workers, including two temporary workers, in retaliation for engaging in or supporting the strike and union activity.

(AP) ? When Michael Phelps walked away from swimming after the London Olympics, he was adamant about one thing: His career was over.

Now, it sounds like he's not so sure.

While saying he's never been happier with his life ? and certainly doesn't miss the grind of what it took to become the most winningest athlete in Olympic history ? Phelps left the door open to change his mind before the 2016 Rio Games.

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Phelps said Monday. "I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

In Barcelona for the world swimming championships, Phelps spoke to The Associated Press and other international media organizations in a series of one-on-one interviews set up by his sponsor, Speedo. When asked by the AP, yes or no, whether he'll compete at the next Olympics, Phelps coyly said he hasn't planned that far ahead in his life.

That's a striking change from his comments before and immediately after the London Games, when he insisted his retirement was set in stone and it had always been his goal to quit swimming before he tuned 30.

Phelps will be 31 at the time of the opening ceremony for the Rio Games.

"I don't know. We're in 2013," he said, before adding, "There's nothing in the works right now."

There's plenty of time for a comeback. Phelps would likely want to begin training before the end of the year, which would allow him to get into peak condition leading up to the next world championships in 2015, an important stepping stone for the Olympics.

Phelps certainly isn't training at the moment. He jammed the small toe of his right foot on the edge of a sofa while at home in Baltimore, and aggravated the injury when he played in a golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.

He's wearing a boot cast on his foot while in Barcelona to cope with a small stress fracture.

After some sightseeing and promotional appearances, Phelps took in a second night of swimming at the Palau Sant Jordi before getting ready to head back to the U.S. on Tuesday. He was accompanied by his new girlfriend, Golf Channel reporter Win McMurry.

"I have no plans to do anything," Phelps said. "I love what I'm doing now. I'm able to travel so much, play golf. I'm on my schedule. I've never been able to have that. I've never been able to do really whatever I want to do. I go wherever I want to go. I see whatever I want to see. It's nice waking up at 10, 11, 12 o'clock in the afternoon. I'm pretty lazy besides playing golf. I don't do much."

He does have some projects away from the pool, including a series of swim schools and a foundation devoted to water safety. He said those are fulfilling projects, but he's still trying to sort out where he wants to go in his life.

"Peter (Carlisle, his agent) asked me where I want to be in one year, five years and 10 years," Phelps said. "I'm still in the process of putting everything down on paper."

While passionate about golf, Phelps seems to realize it doesn't present much of a career path other than playing in celebrity tournaments. He once talked bravely about not setting any limits on how far he could go in the sport, even joking that the only way he would be at the Rio Games was at a golfer (the sport is returning to the Olympic program in 2016).

But the game has clearly humbled him since London, despite getting lessons from famed coach Hank Haney as part of a show for the Golf Channel.

"I'm competitive in everything," Phelps said. "But golf has a very slow learning curve. For me to be able to get where I want to be, it's going to take some time to get there. It's not something that's going to take 24 hours and, bang, I'll be able to shoot par and be a scratch golfer. It's so annoying. It's probably the most humbling thing I've ever done, the most humbling sport I've ever done, the toughest thing I've ever done."

Phelps' competitive side showed after the U.S. men lost in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Sunday. The Americans were edged at the finish by the French, a repeat of last summer's Olympics when a team that included Phelps also settled for silver.

"We should never lose that relay with the talent we have on the team," he said.

While vague on a possible comeback, Phelps was downright candid with this thoughts about the relay ? perhaps because the head coach of the U.S. men's team is Bob Bowman, who was Phelps' longtime coach and remains a good friend and business partner.

Phelps made his feelings known to Bowman in a series of blunt texts, suggesting the Americans should have gone with Jimmy Feigen in the leadoff spot and Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian as the anchor.

Instead, Adrian went first and Feigen took over for the finish despite being the least experienced member of the U.S. foursome. He acknowledged paying too much attention to the teams next to him, the Australians and the Russians, and not noticing the French coming up in an outside lane until it was too late.

"I was so fired up," Phelps said. "We have enough guys on that team who can swim faster than that, and that was just frustrating for me to watch."

Not frustrating enough to announce his comeback.

Not yet anyway.

That said, it's clear just about everyone on the U.S. team would love for Phelps to rejoin them in time for Rio. Though he always had to be treated a bit differently than everyone else because of his fame, he seemed to get along well with his fellow swimmers. He still stays in contact with many of them; in fact, he was hanging out with Allison Schmitt and Conor Dwyer at his home the day he hurt his toe.

Phelps has been catching up with the U.S. team during his quick trip to Barcelona.

"It was so good to see him. We miss him so much," said Missy Franklin, the star of the women's squad. "The team's not the same without him. But we still have an incredible team and he has taught us so much, and I think we're all excited to carry on his legacy after him."

The most experienced member of the team, Natalie Coughlin, said it was strange to be at a meet of this magnitude without Phelps.

"I haven't been on a team without Michael in 14 years, so this is pretty crazy," Coughlin said. "I would love to see Michael back. But I just want to see him be happy. He's enjoying his life right now and enjoying his time away from the pool and well deserved ? very well deserved."

Intel, Microsoft, Oracle Defend Apple as iPhone 4 Ban Looms

for AppAdvice Appadvice-47c9dc177f

Some of the biggest names in technology are coming to Apple's aid as it faces a ban by the International Trade Commission (ITC) of the iPhone 4. Intel, Microsoft and Oracle are now coming to Apple's defense, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, BSA ? a trade group that represents the three companies ? has joined Apple in asking President Obama to stop the ban, which takes effect Aug. 4. The group says that the use of essential industry patents to ban products shouldn't be allowed except under unusual circumstances.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have also expressed similar concerns.

In June, the ITC ruled that the AT&T versions of Apple's iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G all infringed on patents owned by Samsung. Of the three devices, the iPhone 4 is the only handset that remains on sale around the world.

The Verizon iPhone 4 is not included in the ban.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman is said to be conducting a careful and balanced review process of the ITC decision as established by law and with equal opportunity to consider all perspectives related to the case.

A U.S. president has not intervened in an ITC ban since President Reagan in 1987.

Arrest made after online threats to UK campaigner

Social media

British police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with online threats made toward a feminist campaigner, a case which has ignited calls for social media platforms to institute stronger protections against verbal abuse.

Caroline Criado-Perez says she has been facing a deluge of abuse ? including threats to rape and kill her ? over Twitter during the past several days. She said the threats started after her campaign to get a woman's picture on a U.K. bank note succeeded and resulted in the Bank of England's announcement last week that author Jane Austen will feature on England's new 10-pound notes.

In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted every year for Facebook posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene. But while there have been several cases of online threats directed at sports figures and politicians, the verbal assault against Criado-Perez appears to have ignited an unrivalled response and backlash against Twitter itself.

The graphic and offensive threats come as combatting the scourge of violence against women has taken on a more public sense of urgency worldwide, when tales of gang rapes in India and Brazil circulated around the world. Earlier this year, more than 130 nations agreed on a U.N. blueprint to combat violence against women, "one of the gravest violations of human rights in the world," according to Michelle Bachelet, the head of the U.N. women's agency.

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chen, too, called violence against women "a global health problem of epidemic proportions" when the first major global review of violence against women came out in June ? a description that Criado-Perez drew on when writing in the New Statesman about the abuse directed against her. She urged Chen to "take a look at Twitter."

Already, Criado-Perez's experience has set off a campaign and petition to press Twitter to take more action to combat online threats.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged Twitter to carry out a full review of its policies on abusive threats and crimes, and a petition urging Twitter to introduce a "button" that would make it easier to report abusive Tweets has garnered 12,000 signatures.

On Sunday, British police arrested a 21-year-old man, who wasn't immediately identified, in relation to Criado-Perez's case.

She posted on Twitter that she was at a police station to make a statement and had many more threats to report ? followed by the hashtag "shouting back."

If you're getting a Chromecast, here's everything you need to know!

The Google Chromecast is one of the hot tickets in the tech world right now, and while it has somewhat limited functionality compared to something like an Apple TV, there's a lot to be said for it. It's only $35 for starters, and has cross-platform functionality ? though Google's idea of cross-platform is still limited to ChromeOS and the Chrome browser, iOS and Android. That's great news for us however, as with Netflix and YouTube initially ? and likely Google Play Music when it finally makes the jump to iOS ? supported already, we can get in on the action. So, if you're tempted, keep on scrolling for everything you need to know!

Setup

Our buddies over at Android Central have been playing with the Chromecast for a few days now, and have put together a pretty comprehensive setup guide. On Android there's a handy app available in Google Play to help you get going, but if you're going to be using your Chromecast with your Mac and or your iOS device, you'll need to use the Mac to get setup. Head over to the Google Chromecast page where you'll find a download link for the Chromecast app for your Mac. Once installed, it's a matter of a few simple steps to get your Chromecast dongle set up on your home WiFi network, and then you should be good to go.

Playing your content on your TV

Andrew from Android Central has put together a great walkthrough video on what to do when you're up and running with your Chromecast in order to get your stuff onto your TV. Though demonstrated on an Android device, the basic principles are pretty much the same on iOS, so it's definitely worth a watch.

Netflix is one of the initial partners for Chromecast, and Android Central's Jerry Hildenbrand has tested things out with the Netflix iOS app, and all appears well so far. When your YouTube and Netflix apps are on the same networks as your Chromecast, you should see the magic buttons appear in front of you.

Using the browser

Chromecast can mirror full screen browser tabs from your Mac or PC to your TV in the same way you mirror content from your mobile device. This is very similar to the AirPlay we know and love, though only works for content within the confines of Chrome on your computer. And, with the Google Cast Chrome extension installed, you can also beam YouTube videos over directly from the browser. Pretty neat.

Jump into the forums!

The Android Central forums are buzzing about the Chromecast right now, and is without a doubt the best place you can go to get tips and tricks, share your own thoughts, and generally jump into some great discussions about Google's $35 dongle. As more folks get their hands on one, and more services partner up, the discussions will only get better. And, with your Mobile Nations Passport, you can just head on over there and get started!

Your thoughts

If you've already picked up a Chromecast, or are planning on doing so soon, we'd like to hear your thoughts on it. What is it that attracts you to it, that makes it a compelling purchase for you? In particular, what drives you to the Chromecast over something such as an Apple TV? We'd love to hear from you!

Spanish train driver charged with 79 homicide counts

By Tracy Rucinski

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (Reuters) - The driver of a Spanish high-speed train that derailed and killed 79 people was released pending trial on charges of reckless homicide, a judge ruled on Sunday night.

Francisco Garzon, 52, had been under arrest since Thursday. He is suspected of driving the train too fast through a tight curve on the outskirts of the northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela.

Examining Magistrate Luis Alaez formally charged Garzon with "79 counts of homicide and numerous offences of bodily harm, all of them committed through professional recklessness," the court said in a statement.

In a closed-door hearing before Judge Alaez, Garzon admitted taking the curve too fast, blaming it on a momentary lapse, according to media reports.

Alaez set the following conditions of release: Garzon must check in regularly with the court, surrender his passport and not drive trains.

None of the parties in the case, which include state train operator Renfe, state railway firm Adif and two insurance companies, had asked for Garzon to be jailed pending trial, and he was not seen as a flight risk, the court statement said.

At 8:41 p.m. on Wednesday the eight-carriage, high-speed train slammed into a concrete wall, crumpled, and some of the cars caught fire. The impact was so strong that one of the carriages was thrown several meters high over an embankment.

The death toll from Spain's worst train disaster in decades rose to 79 after one injured person - a woman from the United States - died on Sunday.

Seventy people remain hospitalized with injuries from the crash, 22 are in critical condition.

Garzon has worked for Renfe for 30 years, 10 as a driver. His father also worked on the rails and he grew up in Renfe-owned housing in the northwestern town of Monforte de Lemos and went to school with other train-workers' children.

After the accident he was hospitalized with a head injury. On Saturday he was released from the hospital but remained in police custody until he was taken to the hearing at Santiago de Compostela's main courthouse.

Neither lawyers nor members of Garzon's family could be reached for comment.

Alaez has been assigned to investigate the case and will also look at whether the train, the tracks or the security system that slows down the trains were at fault.

UP TO THE DRIVER

The Alvia train involved in the accident, one of three types of high-speed train services that run in Spain, received a full maintenance check on the morning of the journey, the head of Renfe said, and security systems were in good shape.

"As far as we know, the train was in perfect condition when it set off on its journey," Renfe President Julio Gomez-Pomar told newspaper ABC.

The Alvia trains run both on traditional tracks, where drivers must heed warning systems to reduce speed, and on high-speed tracks where a more sophisticated security system will automatically slow down trains that are going too fast.

At the section of the track where the accident happened, it was up to the driver to respond to prompts to slow down.

Gomez-Pomar rejected criticism that the safety system was insufficient, saying the debate "does not make much sense".

CELEBRATIONS CANCELED

The city of Santiago was meant to be celebrating the yearly festival of St. James on July 25, with thousands of Christian pilgrims arriving after walking the famous Camino de Santiago ancient pilgrimage trail.

A week of concerts and other cultural events were canceled after the train crash on the eve of the festival. On Sunday, black ribbons of mourning hung on the empty stages that had been set up.

Pilgrims, many of them fresh off the trail and carrying backpacks, crammed into a standing-room-only Mass in Santiago's centuries-old cathedral where they were asked to remember the victims of the accident.

At the cathedral gates, along with flowers and candles commemorating the dead, some people left walking sticks from their journeys and others placed shells, the symbol of St. James and badge of honor for the pilgrims who complete the journey.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who visited the crash site after the tragedy, is due to return on Monday to Santiago, the city where he was born, for an official funeral ceremony for the victims.

Dolores Mato, 57, a shopkeeper who works close to the ancient cathedral, expressed sympathy and grief for the victims and their families, but also for Garzon, who she said had been "crucified" in the media.

Report: Dozens killed as Egypt security forces clash with Morsi supporters in Cairo

As the atmosphere in Cairo becomes increasingly tense and combustible protesters took to the streets.? NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

At least 70 people died early Saturday when security forces attacked protesters supporting deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehan El-Haddad said according to reports.

Al-Jazeera's Egyptian TV station, meanwhile, reported much higher casualty figures in the early morning violence: 120 dead and some 4,500 injured, Reuters said. The figures could not be independently confirmed.

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood holds a mask of ousted president Mohammed Morsi during a rally near Rabaa Adawiya square in Cairo on Friday.

Hundreds of thousands of people took part in rival political rallies in various Egyptian cities on Friday, and at least 274 people were injured, officials said.

Both supporters of the army and Morsi backers had announced they would be protesting Friday and warned there could be bloodshed. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians earlier in the week to hold rallies to give the military a ?mandate? to confront weeks of violence caused by his July 3 overthrow of Morsi, Reuters reported.

"Sisi out! Morsi is president! Down with the army!" a gigantic crowd of Morsi protesters, who were holding a sit-in protests around?Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, chanted, reported the BBC.

Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country's first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was ejected from power. On Friday, Mena news agency reported he would be detained for 15 days while a judge investigated allegations against him. This is his first formal detention since he was ousted, Al Jazeera reported.

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

According to Reuters, the probe stems from charges that he conspired with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape jail during the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, killing prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers, and lighting buildings on fire.

"At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was "deeply concerned" by reports that Morsi had been ordered to be detained for more than two weeks.

"We of course are deeply concerned by reports that an Egyptian court has ordered the detention of Mr. Morsi," she said. "I can't speak to the specific charges, but we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work towards his release. Clearly this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt, and that's where our focus is."

A Reuters witness said thousands of pro-Morsi activists clashed with pro-army protesters in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, with some demonstrators hurling stones down on the crowds from nearby rooftops.

The army has warned it will ?turn its guns? on those who use violence in the protests, Reuters reported, while the Brotherhood has said civil war is a possibility.

On Friday morning, several hundred pro-army supporters gathered in Tahrir Square, the central rallying place two years ago for Egyptians. By night, after the evening prayer marking the end of the day?s Ramadan fast, the crowd had grown to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in the square, according to the BBC.

A banner across one entrance to Tahrir Square read, "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism," the BBC said.

Pro-army demonstrations were planned throughout Egypt. Morsi backers had also announced a large amount of rallies, with 34 in the Cairo area alone, Reuters said.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Egyptian soldiers stand guard atop an armored personnel vehicle on a bridge that leads to Tahrir Square on Friday.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon called on Egyptians to protest peacefully and asked the interim leadership to ensure security, reported Al Jazeera.

But casualties appeared likely after a month in which nearly 200 people, mostly supporters of Morsi, have died, according to Al Jazeera.?

The West has become increasingly alarmed by the course the country of 84 million people has taken. Washington this week said it delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies," reported Reuters.

The U.S. has not made a determination on whether a military coup took place in Egypt, which avoids a decision on whether U.S. aid should be cut off to Egypt.

"It is not in our national interest to make such a determination," State Department spokeswoman Psaki said on Friday, adding the law didn't require that a formal determination be made.?

If the administration were to determine a coup had occurred when Morsi was ousted, the $1.5 billion of military and economic assistance the U.S. provides Egypt would be required by law to stop.?

NBC's Catherine Chomiak and Reuters contributed to this report.

Proactive weekly oil and gas news including Petrel Resources, Magnolia Petroleum and Providence Resources

The market's oil and gas small caps have had been fairly busy this week with AIM-quoted explorer () in focus at the end of the week as it saw its shares soar after it updated on activity in Iraq.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage, the firm said, with a private company with extensive oil and gas interests, whereby it would inject an asset into the firm in return for a minority stake and representation on the board.

House broker Northland kept its 'buy' stance on the stock and noted on the Iraq update: "We welcome the news that management is in discussions to bring in additional assets to the company without significant levels of cash going out of the business."

It added: Petrel?s management has significant experience and technical competence in Iraq, considered one of the world?s pre-eminent hydrocarbon territories."

Also yesterday, () ?revealed it had picked up two more UK coal gas licences to take its number in Britain to five.

The new awards are for deep underground coal gasification prospects at West Cumbria (8,200 hectares) and Largo Bay (8,000 ha) in Scotland. With recent licence awards at Kincardine, the Loughor Estuary and the Dee Estuary, Cluff's total UK acreage now amounts to almost 31,000 ha.

The company?s strategy is to target extended coal seams offshore UK to extract syngas through underground coal gasification (UCG) to supply to power stations and to provide a carbon capture option.

In other news in the week gone, () was boosted by a report that underlines the value of the proposed Barryroe oil field development in Ireland?s Celtic Sea.

Industry consultant Netherland Sewell & Associates Inc (NSAI) assessed the Basal Wealden oil sands, one of Barryroe?s two main zones, and estimated that Providence?s 80% share could generate cash flows in the order of US$10.6bn.

On a discounted basis the consultant puts the figure at US$2.6bn.

This is based on the April 2013 competent person's report, which was also prepared by NSAI, and the cash flows estimated would be further supplemented by the resources in the Middle Wealden sands.

Middle Wealden is estimated to contain 287mln barrels of oil-in-place, of which 45mln are currently thought to be recoverable ? the Basal has 761mln barrels in-place and 266mln recoverable.

The statement on Thursday comes as Providence continues to work on bringing in a development partner to take the project forward into production.

Also in the latter part of the week, () revealed plans to raise up to ?13mln to pay its share of drilling costsfor the upcoming Welwitschia-1 well in Namibia.

Operating partner is due to start drilling Welwitschia-1 in February.

The new cash will also help pay for the acquisition of Wilton Petroleum, announced earlier this month, and to enhance its ability to pursue new ventures.

"At this crucial time in the company's development it is important that we have the means to fund our share of 2013 costs for the Welwitschia-1 well and to have the flexibility to enter into further new ventures,? chief executive Graeme Thompson told investors.

() made an offer to buy more of its majority owned Australian subsidiary.

The explorer currently owns 96.9% of Australia (FOGA), following its recently completed acquisition of Sweetpea Petroleum, which gave it an extra 24.2% of the business unit.

The offer to certain FOGA shareholders is on the same terms as the Sweatpea deal: 2.25 shares for each share in FOGA and the deadline is August 22.

() can appeal the ban on an exploratory well at its Holmwood project in the Weald Basin, Surrey, it emerged last week.

An initial planning application for a well at the site was turned down in 2011 and a subsequent appeal dismissed by an appointed Inspector after a seven day public enquiry in July last year.

Europa (40%) and its partners, (38.4%), Warwick Energy 20% and Alywood Petroleum (1.6%) challenged that decision, which was upheld by High Court judge today.

Meanwhile, US focused () has further boosted future revenue as it unveiled "excellent" initial production at the Statoil operated Jake 2-11 2TFH well in North Dakota.

The well is producing at a rate of 2,244 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).

Magnolia holds a 1.465% net revenue interest in the well and it adds 33 boepd to the firm's net production.

Chief operating officer of Magnolia, Rita Whittington said: "As a result of this second Statoil operated Jake well, the last four wells in which we have participated in North Dakota's prolific Bakken and Three Forks Sanish formations have added almost 200 boepd net to Magnolia."

MoDaCo.Switch enters public beta, gives indecisive HTC One owners both worlds

MoDaCo.Switch enters public beta, gives indecisive HTC One owners both worlds

Can't decide between HTC One's native spin on Android and the Google Edition's vanilla build? Now you don't have to: MoDaCo.Switch is now officially available for public beta testing. True to its name, this custom firmware allows users to reboot the phone and switch into a different version of Android, making it easy to enjoy both Sense 5 and Google's stock AOSP Android build independently. It's more than a simple dual-boot, however, MoDaCo.Switch shares apps and data between both builds, which makes using them together a less jarring experience. The Beta still has some limitations of course; MMS and call log data isn't shared between ROMS and there seem to be some issues with fast boot. Still, if you're willing give it a spin, hop over to the adjacent source link to get started.

Seven killed, including gunman, in Florida shootout; 2 hostages rescued

SWAT officers shot and killed a man they say gunned down 6 people in Hialeah, Fla., ending an hours-long standoff. NBC's ?Bobby Brooks reports.

By Marian Smith and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

SWAT officers shot and killed a gunman early Saturday after he killed 6 people, ending an hours-long standoff near Miami, Fla., police said.

Two people were rescued alive and unharmed from an apartment building where they were being held hostage, Hialeah police spokesman Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told NBC News.

The SWAT team found the gunman barricaded on the fourth floor of the building, where they killed him and saved the two hostages.

NBC Miami

The building manager and her husband were found dead in a hallway and three others, two females and one male, were found in one of the apartments, Rodriguez said. Another man was found dead in the lobby of a building across the street.

"This is one of the worst shootings we've probably had ever in Hialeah," police spokesman Carl Zogby?told NBC Miami.

Police first responded to a 911 call at 6:30 p.m. ET Friday. They evacuated the apartment complex and shut down several surrounding streets.

Negotiators were talking to the gunman before the shootout and police sent a robot onto the scene.

?The end result: seven people have lost their lives in this incident, six innocent victims and the one shooter,? Zogby told the station. ?Now starts the investigation, how and why this happened.?

NBC Miami

A young woman told NBC Miami that two of the victims of the shooting were her parents.

?I guess there was an altercation and the person opened fire on both of them. My mom was dead the moment that she was shot and my dad still had a pulse when I got to him,? the woman said.

One of the victims appeared to have been shot at across the street from the main scene, police said, when the gunman opened fire from a balcony.

?From up there, he was able to shoot at people across the street, catching this one man who was just walking into his apartment,? Rodriguez told the Miami Herald.

Police were investigating the motive and were still identifying those who were killed.

Egypt's ruling military kills scores of Islamists at rally

By

July 27, 2013

CAIRO - The Egyptian authorities unleashed a ferocious attack on Islamist protesters early Saturday, killing at least 72 people in the second mass killing of demonstrators in three weeks and the deadliest attack by the security services since Egypt's uprising in early 2011.

The attack provided further evidence that Egypt's security establishment was reasserting its dominance after President Mohammed Morsi's ouster three weeks ago, and widening its crackdown on his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood. The tactics - many were killed with gunshot wounds to the head or the chest - suggested that Egypt's security services felt no need to show any restraint.

?They had orders to shoot to kill,? said Gehad el-Haddad, a Brotherhood spokesman. The message, he said, was, ?This is the new regime.?

In Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry called this ?a pivotal moment for Egypt? and urged its leaders ?to help their country take a step back from the brink.?

The killings occurred a day after hundreds of thousands of Egyptians marched in support of the military, responding to a call by its commander for a ?mandate? to fight terrorism. The appeal by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who has emerged as Egypt's de facto leader since the military removed Morsi from power, was widely seen as a green light to the security forces to increase their repression of the Islamists.

In the attack Saturday, civilians joined riot police officers in firing live ammunition at the protesters as they marched toward a bridge over the Nile. By early morning, the number of wounded people had overwhelmed doctors at a nearby field hospital.

One doctor sat by himself, crying as he whispered verses from the Quran. Nearby, medics tried to revive a man on a gurney. When they failed he was quickly lifted away to make room for the many others.

With hundreds of people gravely wounded, the toll seemed certain to rise, and by Saturday evening had already surpassed the more than 60 deaths on July 8, when soldiers and police officers fired on pro-Morsi demonstrators.

As the deaths have mounted, more than 200 since the government was overthrown, hopes have faded for a political solution to the standoff between the military and the Brotherhood, whose leaders, including Morsi, are imprisoned or preparing themselves for jail.

In a televised news conference hours after the clash, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim absolved his men of any responsibility and made no mention of the high death toll. His officers, he said, ?have never and will never shoot a bullet on any Egyptian.?

He blamed Morsi's supporters for the violence, saying they planned to disrupt traffic on the bridge. ?We had to stop them,? Ibrahim said. The protesters threw rocks and fired weapons, he said, and a large number of officers were wounded, including two who were shot in the head.

Ibrahim also suggested that further repression was imminent as the authorities prepared to break up sit-ins that thousands of Morsi's supporters have held for weeks.

?God willing, it will be dispersed in a way that doesn't cause many losses,? he said. ?But God willing, it must end.?

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is vice president in the interim government, added a rare note of support for the Brotherhood from the country's new leaders, writing on Twitter that he condemned the ?excessive use of force? and was trying to ?end the standoff in a peaceful manner.?

Kerry called on Egypt's leaders ?to respect the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression? and to open an inclusive political dialogue.

?Over two years ago, a revolution began. Its final verdict is not yet decided, but it will be forever impacted by what happens right now,? he said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke by telephone with el-Sissi, urging him to exercise restraint and ?take steps to prevent further bloodshed and loss of life,? according to a Pentagon statement.

The violence broke out Friday night after a day of large, competing marches by supporters of Morsi and his opponents expressing solidarity with the military. At least eight people died Friday, but there was not the kind of widespread violence that many had feared after el-Sissi's speech Wednesday calling for demonstrations in support of the military.

That changed around 10:30 p.m., when groups of Morsi's supporters left their vast encampment in Nasr City, marching toward the central October 6 Bridge, where police officers were stationed, according to witnesses. Several people said that the protesters had left the camp because it had become overcrowded, and that people had fanned out from the encampment along several boulevards. Others said they had planned to march through a nearby neighborhood.

The group that came under attack walked down Nasr Street, past the reviewing stand where President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981, and the pyramid-shaped memorial to the unknown soldier across the street, toward the bridge.

?We didn't have any weapons,? said Mohamed Abdulhadi, who said he had joined the march, which was ?not violent.? More than 10 other witnesses confirmed his assertion.

The Interior Ministry released a video after the killings that it said showed Morsi supporters firing birdshot at the police and damaging property. It showed protesters throwing rocks, unidentified people wandering into traffic, and one man pulling out what appeared to be a silver pistol and firing it, although it is not clear who the man was or which side of the fighting he was on.

Mohamed Saeed, an agricultural engineer, said he and some of the other protesters had started to exchange words with the officers before even reaching the bridge.

?You know how it is,? he said. ?Some of us said some provocative things, and the tear gas started.? The protesters threw rocks, and the confrontation quickly escalated, Saeed and others said. The Morsi supporters feared that the police were preparing to storm their encampment, so they started building brick walls on the road to ?to prevent them from coming into the sit-in,? Saeed said.

An hour and a half after the clashes started, the police and their allies started firing live ammunition and pellet guns, Saeed said. Other witnesses said they had seen snipers on the roofs of nearby buildings.
