Do You Tip Home Improvement Contractors?

Home Improvement contractor working

People often wonder if they should tip their home improvement contractor, or if it?s not required. The short answer is that no, it is not expected that you tip your contractor. However, as with any person you hire, there are things you can do to reward hard work, or show your appreciation.

Home Improvement Contractor Gratuities

If you feel like you want to, you can tip a home improvement contractor 15-20% (on a smallish job). If there are several workers, and one of them goes out of their way to do something nice, you can show your appreciation in other ways as well.

Here are some things that contractors will appreciate, in case you want to show your appreciation.

1) Referrals

More important than a tip is a referral. This is the number one way that good home improvement contractors get business. If you had a custom home builder?work for you, and you referred them to someone that wanted their services, the referral is worth much more to them than a tip. Depending on the type of job, giving this referral could easily be like giving a tip of 100% of the cost of the job!

2) Favors

While on a work site, many contractors appreciate small favors, such as getting a coffee. Since they are working, and usually can?t walk to a nearby coffee shop, contractors can?t get coffee or lunch easily, so bringing this will be much appreciated. Also, there is nothing nicer than bringing some cold water to a contractor who is working outside on a hot day. If you decide to make lunch or something, just remember to ask if they want it first in case they are uncomfortable being served lunch.

3) Be Flexible

Because of the nature of contracting work, there are bound to be some hitches along the way in any job. Small delays or accidents can slow down a job, small mistakes can cause damage that needs to be repaired, etc. To show your appreciation for a contractor?s hard work, try to be flexible in understanding the nature of home improvement contracting.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many alternatives to tipping with money, and since these cash tips aren?t really expected, these alternatives are a good solution. Again, if you feel willing, people can?t often refuse cash, but it is certainly not required.
