Rdio Will Pay Musicians Directly ? The Broadcast

Rdio Will Pay Musicians Directly
16th October 2012

Rdio, the music-streaming service representing a good challenger to Spotify, decided to adopt an innovative business model. The portal has announced that it would offer payments to artists based on each fan on the site.

Rdio called this project the ?Artist Program? and offered the musicians $10 for every new fan who subscribes to streaming music service through a social media channel. This innovative approach will definitely appeal to musicians and may put the portal ahead of its largest competitors, because the others are currently using one single way of offering music ? trying to make a deal with record labels over the royalties to musicians. In the meantime, everyone knows that artists get only a tiny share of the label?s profits.

At the moment, the premium members of the service can pay $10 monthly in exchange for the possibility to access Rdio?s music catalog. When the new approach is enforced, it will actually make a unique payment of $10 per new fan to musicians. This has a really promising future.

The ?Artist Program? was mostly inspired by the musicians themselves ? in particular, those artists who are extremely popular on the largest social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The streaming service recognized the potential of turning their followers into its own subscribers, while the musicians would also be benefiting from actually being paid by their fans. Everyone wins.

This business model was approved by many artists, including Snoop Dogg, The Scissor Sisters and The Raconteurs, who have already joined this movement. This trend may be a reason for worry for the record labels, as they can get for the first time a token of their mortality. Rdio?s representatives explained in the interview that in fact, there can?t be art without artists. The entertainment industry should realize that if a business fails to reward its most important contributors, then it definitely needs changes.

It will be interesting to see how this approach will work out for both the streaming portal and the musicians. It is also unclear how music fans will receive this suggestion, but the industry observers believe that they will readily embrace this business model. At least they will know that they are helping the artists they love, not record labels that they have no idea of.

Using MVVM Foundation Messenger to Send Data - Stack Overflow

I've been attempting to get to grips with MVVM and am now at the stage of trying to use a messenger. The framework I chose was Josh Smith's MVVM Foundation, mainly because it's small and I'm fairly new to both C# and the MVVM pattern. So far, implementing a message that triggers a method in a different ViewModel has gone smoothly (I think) e.g. to send a message identified by "NameOfMessage" :-

App.Messenger.NotifyColleagues("NameOfMessage");

and on the receiving end e.g. a different ViewModel :-

App.Messenger.Register("NameOfMessage", DoSomething);  Void DoSomething() { // Your code that "does something" here. }

This is all very well and works beautifully; however, it would be great to pass some information along with the message. At the moment it's like sending a postcard to everyone but forgetting to write how amazing your holiday is.

To this end I've tried the following, a property that when set, sends a message under the heading "SentMessage" with the contents of the property SentMessage aka, "_sentMessage" :-

 public string SentMessage     {         get { return _sentMessage; }         set         {             _sentMessage = value;             RaisePropertyChanged("SentMessage");             App.Messenger.NotifyColleagues("SentMessage", _sentMessage);         }     }

This flags no errors and appears to be fine, my problem is the syntax for subscribing to this message :-

App.Messenger.Register("SentMessage", param => { this.ReceivedMessage = (string)param; });

I'd like to receive the message and put the string in another property e.g. ReceivedMessage. What I've tried is above (influenced by Josh's Mediator Prototype) but this raises an error stating "Delegate 'System.Action' does not take 1 arguaments. I guess this is because it's expecting to be pointed to a Method?

If anyone can aid in the correct syntax the help would be greatly appreciated. (This is all written in C# using WPF, .NET Framework 4 and visual studio 2010)

Senate hopeful Thompson's son says send Obama back to Kenya

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The son of Senate candidate and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson has apologized for telling Republicans that the November 6 election gives them the chance to send U.S. President Barack Obama back to Kenya.

Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. The president was born in Hawaii.

"We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago - or Kenya," said Jason Thompson, a frequent surrogate for his father, who faces Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin in a race for a Wisconsin U.S. Senate seat.

Wisconsin is also a battleground state in next month's presidential election.

The 38-year-old Thompson was caught on a secretly recorded videotape speaking at a brunch on Sunday organized by the local Republican Party.

Attendees could be heard chuckling and a woman said: "We are taking donations for that Kenya trip."

The elder Thompson's campaign apologized for the remarks, which were recorded by a Democrat and appeared on website BuzzFeed Politics.

"The Governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do," spokeswoman Lisa Boothe said in a statement. "Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes."

"Governor Thompson was not at the event," Boothe added.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, attended the event along with Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brad Courtney, according to local party spokesman Nathan Conrad.

Both condemned the remark.

"The comment was out of line and his son rightfully apologized," Priebus said in a statement.

"The Republican Party of Wisconsin does not stand by these comments," Conrad said.

A campaign spokesman for Baldwin said Jason Thompson's remarks were "divisive political tactics."

"It's disappointing and unacceptable that Thompson's campaign has crossed this line and Tommy Thompson hasn't said one word about it publicly," said spokesman John Kraus.

Some conservatives and conspiracy theorists have raised questions about whether Obama was born on foreign soil, which would make him ineligible for the presidency.

Obama released a detailed copy of his birth certificate last year that showed he was born in Hawaii to try to put an end to the widely discredited speculation.

Doctors Strike Mutating Bacteria In Teen Acne Battle

A tiny bacteriophage virus can cripple the bacteria that cause troublesome acne on teens' skin. Charles Bowman/University of Pittsburgh

A tiny bacteriophage virus can cripple the bacteria that cause troublesome acne on teens' skin.

Acne, the scourge of many an adolescent life, is getting harder to treat, but 80 percent of teenagers have some form of acne.

Conventional treatment includes topical and oral antibiotics. Studies are now finding the bacteria that cause acne are increasingly resistant to antibiotic treatment. Alternatively, there are effective laser treatments. But these are costly and typically not covered by insurance.

Now, researchers are scrambling to come up with new treatments for acne. One promising possibility involves harnessing a harmless virus living on skin that naturally seeks out and kills the bacteria that cause pimples.

?

'People Always Notice'

It's every teenager's nightmare: big, blistery red bumps on their face.

"That's what people notice first about you, so no matter how great of a person you are, no matter how pretty your eyes are, how nice your smile is, people always notice the blemishes on your face," says Rohini Bagrodia, a really pretty 22-year-old with beautiful eyes, a great smile ? and a history of battling acne.

In school, it meant avoiding the spotlight. "I would always shy away from those opportunities that would bring all the focus on me," Bagrodia says. She wouldn't take part in class discussions. She wouldn't raise her hand. And it's all because of a tiny bacteria that lives on the skin.

UCLA dermatologist Dr. Jenny Kim says many people don't realize it's bacteria that cause acne. "Some people say your face is dirty, you need to clean it more, scrub more, don't eat chocolate, things like that. But really, it's caused by bacteria and the oil inside the pore allow the bacteria to overpopulate," Kim says.

For most teenagers with mild acne, over-the-counter products containing peroxide or salicylic acid are enough to clear up the acne. But, lots of teenagers end up in the doctor's office and getting antibiotics. This was the hardest thing for Bagrodia: No matter how much she followed doctors' orders, diligently cleaning her face and using antibiotic cream, nothing worked.

Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Dermatologist Elizabeth Martin is in private practice in Birmingham, Ala., and is a fellow with the American Academy of Dermatology. She says this bacteria, like many others, is mutating quickly and becoming resistant to antibiotics.

"Over the years, we have seen an increase in this antibiotic-resistant bacterium, both in the U.S. and also worldwide," Martin says. She points to studies that show a tripling of drug-resistant acne bacteria over the past few decades.

This means doctors can no longer rely on antibiotics alone. Most doctors now use a combination of low-dose antibiotics along with benzoyl peroxide, which also kills acne-causing bacteria.

As Martin says, benzoyl peroxide "works to decrease bacteria through a different mechanism than antibiotics, and it helps to prevent development of resistant bacteria. When we combine benzoyl peroxide along with an antibiotic, patients tend to have better clearance of their acne than when we use antibiotics alone."

Other Treatment Options

Retinoids, vitamin A derivatives, can also be used early on to treat acne. Typically creams, they work by unclogging pores before they become large, inflamed bumps.

A stronger form, called Accutane, is used for severe acne. It's a highly effective pill, but it can cause serious side effects, including depression and birth defects. So the government regulates its use.

Intensely focused light and lasers can also help fight acne when other treatments fail. Kim is also a researcher at UCLA. In the room dedicated to light and laser therapy, Kim points out what appears to be a half cylinder with stacks of oblong light bulbs.

"Patients with acne can go right under blue light, and they sit there for about 15-20 minutes, and acne often improves after several treatments," Kim says.

It's not known exactly how light therapy works to fight acne, but Kim says studies indicate it destroys the bacteria. "Probably physically without giving it time to mutate; and the other thing ? the light treatment can improve the inflammation that the bacteria causes in acne," she says.

But laser and light therapy doesn't work for everyone. It's expensive and typically not covered by insurance. So Kim and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh are also looking into an entirely new way to fight acne: taking a harmless virus that lives on the skin and programming it to become a bacteria killer.

"The virus is going to go and kill the bacteria that causes acne. It's just going to break it apart and burst its membrane so there's no time for the bacteria to mutate," she says. It's sort of a surprise attack.

The approach is a promising way to get rid of acne without using antibiotics. If further lab studies prove successful, researchers will begin testing on people to see if viral therapy is both safe and effective in fighting acne.

CBS Local Presidential Forum: Obama/Romney: Duke It Out Over Energy And Health Care

By Carol Cain CBS 62 Detroit

With the roller coaster ride of gas prices across the nation and volatile nature of relations in the Middle East, America?s energy policy is being debated by Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama as the two men vying to become our 45th president continued to answer questions on vital issues in the CBS Local Presidential Forum.

To help voters learn more about the two candidates and their policies, CBS Local asked them 10 questions in 10 days in the exclusive forum.

Both men have advocated for a reduction in foreign oil imports and an expansion of U.S. energy production to boost the economy and create new jobs.? Beyond that, they disagree over the role government should play in subsidizing energy production.

?I have recently put forward a six-part plan to achieve North American energy independence by 2020,? Romney answered. ?First, I will empower states to control all forms of energy development on federal lands within their borders, excluding only those that are off-limits. Second, I will open offshore areas to energy development. Third, I will pursue a North American Energy Partnership so that America can benefit from the resources of its neighbors. Fourth, I will ensure accurate assessment of the nation?s resources by updating decades-old surveys. Fifth, I will restore transparency and fairness to federal regulations. And sixth, I will facilitate private-sector-led development of new energy technologies and remove barriers to a diversification of our fuel system and vehicle fleet.?

When Obama took office, the country was importing more than 60 percent of our oil. Today, it has dropped to just over 40 percent.

Obama wants to cut net oil imports in half by 2020, cutting imports by 5.5 million barrels per day and reducing our reliance on foreign oil to its lowest level in almost three decades.

Another issue near the top of every ledger board of concerns mentioned by Americans: health care.

?Everyone knows healthcare is a huge issue and with baby boomers aging, and more taking care of their kids and also their parents, it?s going to be a bigger issue tomorrow that this country has to come to grips with,? said Jim Dehem, president and CEO of Community Living Services, a non profit that provides at-home care services for thousands in Michigan and other states.

?Supporting people with disabilities and seniors at home and not in facilities is another growing factor in all of this. It is not not only the right thing to do?it is imperative to meeting the demands that will impact our Medicaid and Medicare systems,? Dehem added.

The two presidential candidates were asked a question by CBS Local about Obamacare vs. Romneycare and asked them to talk about the similarities or differences between the two plans.

Today: Rising Health Care Costs

?President Obama?s health care law raised taxes on middle class families and raided $716 billion from Medicare to pay for a federal takeover of our nation?s health care system,? Romney said.

Romney added he took the exact opposite approach in Massachusetts where he worked with a Democratic state legislature to enact health reforms that applied Massachusetts solutions to Massachusetts problems.

?The reforms I pursued did not raise taxes and did not raid the health security programs our nation?s seniors rely on. And they passed with a near unanimous support, were never challenged in court, and enjoy broad support within the state.?

Romney added, ? I will repeal Obamacare?s one-size-fits-all approach and restore state?s to their traditional role as leaders in solving our health care challenges.?

Obama believes affordable health insurance is key to every American. He added that by expanding coverage and putting a stop to insurance company abuses, Obamacare is giving millions of Americans peace of mind.

The Affordable Care Act is holding insurance companies accountable ? putting an end to the worst abuses, such as capping or dropping your coverage when you get sick or refusing to cover kids just because they were born with a preexisting condition.

Obama also said Obamacare was based on Romneycare and that it was a shame to see the Governor turn his back on that law and on the millions of people who are benefitting from it.

Coming up: Hear what President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney have to say to this question: Considering the anti-American sentiment and the volatile nature of the Middle East, what is your policy on national defense??
