A tough clean-up begins in Breezy Point

Residents of Breezy Point, N.Y., are beginning the long hard task of rebuilding their community, pumping water, clearing debris and reflecting on what they've lost.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. -- The Allens hauled out the fridge, board games and the many other everyday objects that were the props of their lives on Thetford Avenue before?Superstorm Sandy flooded their bungalow and turned their world upside down.

The possessions were piled high on their deck on Sunday in front of their one-story home, which now has a slight but noticeable tilt. Many of them were headed for the dump, but they were determined to keep the most important ones, such as a heart-shaped photo of KeriLynn Allen?s deceased mother, Ann Marie McCarron, who owned the home before her daughter and husband bought it upon her death six years ago.

KeriLynn and Drew Allen clean their flood-ravaged Breezy Point, N.Y., bungalow.

?We both went house shopping together and as soon we walked in here, we fell in love with this house,? Allen, 41, said of the mother-daughter search for a home 16 years ago. ?We both said, ?This is it,? you know. We knew there was no more searching, no more looking, it was done. So, it?s hard to see it in this shape.?

A difficult cleanup has begun in Breezy Point, a tight-knit community nestled between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in a small corner New York City, days after Hurricane Sandy unleashed raging floods that damaged thousands of homes and triggered an inferno that burned more than 100 others.

Some families can get inside their homes, while others are still waiting for the waters to recede to make a first assessment of the damage. Still others have nothing to clean up because their homes were consumed by the six-alarm fire that blazed for hours.

Over the weekend, the Sanitation Department began removing storm debris, an important milestone because the community had no dumpsters to throw out the spoiled food and soaked rugs and furniture. But a lot of the work is being left up to the people of Breezy Point and their bands of friends, as it is elsewhere in the disaster zone.

KeriLynn Allen looks through a family photo album rescued from the family's flooded home.

?I was a basket case for the past couple of days but, you know, you come in here and you?ve got to put on your big girl pants and ? you have to get through it,? said Allen, who barely escaped the floodwaters during the night of Oct. 29 with her husband, Drew, and 12-year-old son, Ryan. ?This is the first step in getting things together.?

Residents are concerned about the threat to their water-logged homes posed by toxic black mold. Many are emptying out their first floors, including ripping out dry wall, floor panels and sheet rock, in a bid to salvage them.

In front of the nearby home of Rod and Anna Court, a slab of wood with the message ?1 day at a time? painted on it leaned against the open hood of an SUV.

?We just got to do one day at a time because if you start thinking about it, it gets too depressing in the long term,? said Dan Court, a 56-year-old nutritionist, who was helping his parents -- Rod, 80, Anna, in her late 70s -- clean their home, concentrating for the moment on mopping tiles with bleach.

Court began to list how many of the extended family?s Breezy Point homes were damaged, stopping when he got to eight. Then he started laughing.

?It?s a total disaster,? said Court, who lives in Yorktown, a suburb north of New York City. ?That?s what I?m saying, you can?t think that far. It?s ? unbelievable.?

He noted one concern of many family members is what they should and shouldn?t do, ?whether they?re hurting themselves, shooting themselves in the foot? regarding insurance claims.

That concern also was raised by Ann Marie Campbell, who was cleaning out the flooded first floor of the nearby home of her 85-year-old mother, Kathleen.

?We?re trying to figure out what?s going on and what to do. I don?t know what to do, do you like save this, wipe it down with bleach?? Campbell asked as she cleaned furniture on Friday. ?We?re really not being guided what to do ? because I think the people who would be guiding us (the community?s cooperative board) also lost their houses.?

The uncertainty of the road ahead is something that the people of Breezy Point, a tight-knit community founded more than a century ago by Irish immigrants, will have to come to terms with, said the Rev. Msgr. Michael Curran of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, where many residents and their pets -- cats, dogs and birds -- took shelter during the storm.

?We?re still making this up as we go along. Nobody knows exactly where we?re going. ? It?s not going to be easy,? Curran said after Sunday Mass. ?The image I am using is like a very extended experience of Lent, that we go from ashes literally and water, to new and better life. And I think God will see us through it, and the nature of this community ? will pull everybody through.?

There have been some laughs as the cleanup proceeded, with Campbell joking about her Irish mother?s obsession with the Kennedy clan, as demonstrated by her hand-painted watercolors of the family. Dan Court?s brother, Ken, said he has been dealing with requests for offbeat items from relatives, such as brass knobs on a cabinet door, a check and a metal box.

There has been heartache, too.

Mary Ann Dalton was out on Sunday to support her parents, Chris and Tom, who are in their mid-80s and have lived in Breezy Point for 55 years. They?re house is ?down to wire and boards,? with the couple having lost everything, she said.

?I was sitting there taking pictures of ? my parents? dresser that they had when they were first married and it just went in the (dump) truck ? and crumpled up as they do that turning thing. So it?s really been tough,? she said, her voice trembling.

David Friedman / NBC News

A bag of ruined possessions goes out the door of the Breezy Point, N.Y., home of Drew and KeriLynn Allen.

The Allens are hoping they can return to live in their bungalow, which KeriLynn said they bought after her mother?s death at 60 to ?feel her presence.?

?We almost died. ? So, all of this is, this is nothing,? she said of the aftermath. ?I was praying to every angel I had in heaven to save us and somebody was with us that night."

?I just sat there with my family and we just prayed out loud, and I called in my parents and my grandparents,? she said. ?I said one of them had to be with me, so I think my mother was working overtime.?

Dogs That Chase Their Tails May Have OCD

Cover Image: November 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Researchers believe canine compulsions may be similar to human ones

German shepherds chasing their tail in endless circles and bull terriers snapping at invisible flies appear endearing to some pet owners. Yet researchers say these spontaneous behaviors in dogs may be manifestations of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and may help shed light on the condition in humans.

?Some of these compulsions are more common in certain breeds, which suggests a genetic factor,? says Hannes Lohi, a professor of canine genomics at the University of Helsinki and co-author of a study on canine compulsions published in July in PLoS ONE. To learn more about the disorder, Lohi and his colleagues distributed a detailed questionnaire to 368 dog owners in Finland, 150 of which showed no signs of compulsion and served as controls. The researchers also took blood samples from 181 of the canine subjects, which belonged to four breeds: standard and miniature bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and German shepherds.

Researchers said several characteristics of canine compulsive disorder were similar to those of human OCD. Like humans, dogs with compulsive disorders usually began their repetitive behaviors before they reached sexual maturity. Some dogs suffered only a few episodes during their lifetime, whereas others engaged in the behavior for lengthy periods throughout the day. Littermates often had the same behavioral disposition. ?There might be a shared biology behind the development of the disease,? Lohi says.

Not everyone agrees. Perminder Sachdev, director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Australia, notes that humans, unlike animals, usually recognize these distressing behaviors and attempt to control them. Tail chasing, he argues, is more akin to stereotyped and repetitive behavior, which is often seen in people with autism. ?I think that it is difficult to argue that tail chasing is a true model of OCD,? Sachdev says. Lohi, however, plans to check further into dog-human connections in future studies.

Agriculture and food production contribute up to 29 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Feeding the world releases up to 17,000 megatonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually, according to a new analysis released October 30 by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). But while the emissions "footprint" of food production needs to be reduced, a companion policy brief by CCAFS lays out how climate change will require a complete recalibration of where specific crops are grown and livestock are raised.

Together, Climate Change and Food Systems (published in the 2012 Annual Review of Environment and Resources) and Recalibrating Food Production in the Developing World: Global Warming Will Change More Than Just the Climate (published by CCAFS), shed new light on the intertwining evolutions of climate change and the world's food system and their potential impact on humanity's relationship with food.

"Climate Change mitigation and adaptation are critical priorities. Farmers around the world, especially smallholder farmers in developing countries, need access to the latest science, more resources and advanced technology. This research serves as an urgent call for negotiators at the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Doha," said Bruce Campbell, CCAFS's program director.

"We are coming to terms with the fact that agriculture is a critical player in climate change. Not only are emissions from agriculture much larger than previously estimated, but with weather records being set every month as regional climates adjust and reset, there is an urgent need for research that helps smallholder farmers adapt to the new normal." said Frank Rijsberman, the CEO of the CGIAR Consortium.

While previous studies have looked at the contribution of agriculture to emissions, Climate Change and Food Systems assesses the entire food system's emissions "footprint" -- in total somewhere between a fifth and third of the greenhouse gases emitted by people on this planet. This figure accounts for every aspect of food production and distribution -- including growing crops and raising livestock, manufacturing fertilizer, and storing, transporting and refrigerating food. Agriculture accounts for around 80 percent of these emissions, but the combined contribution of transport, refrigeration, consumer practices and waste management is growing.

"The food-related emissions and, conversely, the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the food system, will profoundly alter the way we grow and produce food. This will affect different parts of the world in radically different ways, but all regions will have to change their current approach to what they grow and eat," said Sonja Vermeulen, the head of research at CCAFS and the lead author of Climate Change and Food Security.

Determining what crops grow in which places

Yields of the three biggest crops in terms of calories provided -- maize, rice and wheat -- will decrease in many developing countries as temperatures rise and rainfall becomes more unpredictable, according to Recalibrating Food Production in the Developing World. The analysis, which studies the potential effects of climate change on 22 of the world's most important commodities, highlights the impending transformations of the agricultural landscape.

By 2050, climate change could cause irrigated wheat yields in developing countries to fall by 13 percent. Irrigated rice is these same countries could tumble 15 percent. In Africa, many farmers of maize, which is not that well suited to increased temperatures, could lose 10 to 20 percent of their yields.

Additional calorie and protein sources will also suffer in many places. The cost of feeding livestock with maize and grain will become more expensive. And the availability of fish -- which are particularly susceptible to higher temperatures and higher ocean salinity -- will become increasingly constrained.

Vegetable sources of protein will not fare much better. Soybeans have great difficulty withstanding higher temperatures. Even heartier crops, such as millet, lentils and cowpea -- "the poor man's meat" -- can wither under too much heat stress.

Higher temperatures and unpredictable rainfall impact more than just crop yields. These changes also alter the underlying ecosystems that support agriculture. Freshwater resources, already strained is several regions across the globe, will become even less reliable as rain becomes less predictable.

"Ecosystem changes due to climate change may spawn shifts in the intensity of pests and diseases, including potato blight and beetles, that will further limit food production. Indeed, even if crops could withstand increased temperatures and decreased rainfall, their yields could drop because of these scourges," said Philip Thornton, the author of Recalibrating Food Production and a theme leader at CCAFS.

Climate impacts beyond the farm

The impact of climate change also hits before and after harvest. Every step of the food chain -- from the seed to the farm to the cooking pot -- is at risk. Increased temperatures and flooding, which exacerbate challenges to food storage and distribution, may cause more outbreaks of food-borne illnesses. This spread of diarrheal diseases, which already kill 1.9 million people a year, and livestock-related diseases, which include zoonoses, infectious diseases transmitted from livestock and other animals to humans, will hit the poor in low-income countries hardest.

"So far, the climate change discussion has focused on the need to reduce emissions and sustainably boost crop yields, but it is crucial also to include food safety in our foresight and planning," said Vermeulen.

As farmers and food producers adapt and recalibrate their responses to climate change and its many challenges, the culture of food and what is eaten will need to adjust or change completely as different crops are raised to compensate for new growing conditions.

"The problems that climate change produces in the fields will be tackled in industrialized countries. It is the smallholder farmers in Africa and South Asia and the urban poor who spend too much of their wages on food; these are the people who will have less to eat in the near future unless we adapt at a much faster pace," said Robert Zougmor?, CCAFS' regional program leader for West Africa.

The challenges laid out in these research papers -- lowering the emissions footprint of food production and adapting food systems to changing climates -- must be confronted as the world population grows to an estimated nine to ten billion people by 2050. Feeding this many new people -- the equivalent of two additional Indias -- will not only require substantial increases in production, but better access to a nutritious diet as well.

"The good news is that if farmers and food producers start to adapt now, they can stave off some of the dour food production and distribution scenarios laid out in this research. But they can't face these complex, interrelated problems, which vary from crop to crop and region to region, alone. They need support from the highest levels," Thornton said.
