Poor monsoon rains hit millions of Indian farmers

KATHURA, India (AP) ? The farmer walks past muddy fields of stunted sugarcane and damaged rice paddies as a light drizzle falls. "Too late, too late," he says of the rains he has been praying for since many weeks ago.

For nearly two months, Satyavan Narwal's eyes scoured the heavens looking for the monsoon rains that would nourish his crops, but he found nothing and was left with parched earth. Now monsoon showers are soaking the fields ? but late August is much too late for him.

This year's fickle monsoon has played havoc with millions of Indian farmers. The showers, which normally run from June to September, are crucial in a country where 60 percent of the population works in agriculture and less than half the farmland is irrigated.

"Here farming is entirely on God's mercy. If nature doesn't bless us, the farmer can't do anything," Narwal says.

India's Meteorological Department has said it expects the country to get at least 10 percent less rain this year than during a normal monsoon, but large parts of the country have been hit much harder.

In the northwestern state of Haryana, where Narwal's family has farmed for generations, rainfall is less than half what it should have been. And when the rains finally did come, the crops were already nearly dead, fit only to be used as animal feed.

Shriveled old men share a water pipe and one of them points to the skies and shouts "What now, brother?" as they watch men and women carry damaged sugar cane to feed to their cattle. At the edge of fields, young men stand, hands on hips, shaking their heads in dismay. The village is 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of New Delhi.

By now the sugar cane crop should have been at least eight feet tall (2.4 meters tall). Rice paddy crops would have been lush and emerald green. Small patches of pearl millet, corn and sorghum would have dotted the landscape.

But the sun shone on with determination through all of July and most of August so that the cane is now only knee-high at best and most of the rice crop is burnt.

The lack of monsoon rains has also been partly to blame for the worst blackout in world history, which cut power to half of India last month. Large-scale farmers were using extra power to pump water from deep aquifers, and little electricity was being generated by hydropower projects.

Across the country rains in June and July ? a crucial time for farmers ? were nearly 20 percent below normal.

"Now some of the crop is so dry and damaged even our cattle won't eat it," says farmer Mahinder Singh, as he watches over the cleaning up of his sugar cane fields.

Punjab, the unofficial breadbasket of India, has received less than 40 percent of the rain it should have. Large swaths of western Gujarat and Maharashtra have been declared drought-stricken.

The government has said it's not worried about food scarcity because millions of tons of rice and wheat from earlier bumper harvests are spilling out of state-owned granaries.

But for the average farmer, who lives and earns from season to season, a poor monsoon means that food must be carefully rationed because he has little money to spend.

With dreams of a good harvest, most small- and medium-scale farmers borrow money, often at exorbitant interest rates, from local money lenders to buy seeds and fertilizers and hire tractors to plow the fields.

"Now even they won't give farmers money. They know there are no crops so there's no chance of recovery," said Ranbir Singh, as he cleaned up his three acres of dead sugarcane.

He already has to pay off loans of 300,000 rupees ($5,400), a fortune for a poor farmer.

"Now I will need to borrow more money to feed myself, but lenders will hold back," he said.

With nearly 70 percent of India's population living in rural areas, farming is vital to the economy. A poor monsoon is expected to further dampen already disappointing growth this year, according Citigroup economist Rohini Malkani.

Poor agricultural output could result in growth as low as 5.4 percent in the current fiscal year, down from the bank's earlier estimates of 6.4 percent, according to the economist's August report.

"If drought conditions worsen, headline growth could come in lower at 4.9 percent," she writes.

The federal government and many state governments have hesitated to declare a drought for fear of causing panic and because it requires them to assess each farmers' losses and compensate them.

Farmers in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh state, which have not been given declarations of drought, are losing patience.

"What will it take for the government to declare a drought?" asks Narwal. "Will all the farmers have to die first?"

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said Cabinet ministers would meet later this week to discuss the impact of the poor monsoon.

In Kathura village, however, Pankaj Aggarwal, the top district official, brushes aside talk of a drought, saying that the few recent days of rain will revive the crops.

Meanwhile, farmers lament the lack of government investment in irrigation and other infrastructure that could protect farmers from the vagaries of the monsoon.

"Where are the irrigation canals, the irrigation pumps, the electricity supply that the government keeps promising the farmers?" asked Dharmendra Malik, a farmer and activist in Uttar Pradesh.

"You have food grains in your stocks so you're not worried, but that doesn't mean you abandon 600 million of your people who tend the fields," he said.

No comments - Diary of a Republican Hater

?????Today Romney claimed that he didn't save any taxes by keeping hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign tax havens.

????http://diaryofarepublicanhater.blogspot.com/2012/08/romney-claims-to-have-gained-no-tax.html

???? What is clear from looking at his tax returns is that a big motivator for setting up his "blind trusts" is to shield money to pass on to the Romney children.

???? "Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, have used sophisticated estate- planning techniques for more than a decade to minimize taxes and amass at least $100 million for their family outside of their estate."

????? "The couple created trusts as early as 1995, when Romney was building wealth as chief executive officer of Bain Capital LLC. They packed one for their children with investments that stood to appreciate and set up another for charity that provides a tax deduction and income. The candidate's retirement account, valued at as much as $87.4 million, also may benefit his heirs for decades."

???? http://newyork.newsday.com/business/mitt-romney-tax-returns-show-strategies-for-moving-money-to-kids-1.3928955

????? One thing that Harry Reid may be right about-despite all the talk that he had made "wild" claims-?is that Romney is worth considerably more when you factor in the blind trusts than even his $250 million that his-incomplete-2010 return indicated.

??????"It's beneficial for your kids and grandkids to push the money downstream," said David Scott Sloan, chairman of the national private wealth services estate-planning practice at the law firm Holland & Knight LLP in Boston. "The Romneys appear to be doing things that are similar to what other high-net-worth families do." Wealthy couples use strategies allowed under the federal tax system such as moving assets to trusts so that the money may be subject to little or no gift and estate taxes, Sloan said. The Romney family trust is worth $100 million, according to the campaign. That money isn't included in the couple's personal fortune, which the campaign estimates at as much as $250 million."

?????? http://newyork.newsday.com/business/mitt-romney-tax-returns-show-strategies-for-moving-money-to-kids-1.3928955

??????While Romney's apologists-many of them in the mainstream David Brooks' press-will cluck cluck the suggestion that Romney selects his policies based on those that help him personally, you can't help but notice that his and Ryan's plan for inheritance taxes, etc. all benefit him greatly, whereas the President's plan would raise his taxes:

?????? "Estate Tax The Romneys would pay higher taxes under the estate-tax proposals of President Barack Obama and would pay less under Romney's plan. Obama has proposed increasing the estate tax from current levels and curtailing wealth-transfer strategies. The Republican presidential candidate wants to eliminate the estate tax, which currently applies a top rate of 35 percent and a $10.24 million exemption on a married couple's combined assets."

?????? "A repeal of the levy may save the Romneys about $70 million in federal estate taxes after they both die, assuming the couple's combined taxable estate was $200 million after deductions for items such as administrative expenses and charitable contributions. Compared with today's rates, Obama's proposal may cost the Romneys an additional $20 million.

?????? "At the core of the Romneys' estate-planning strategy is a family trust. The technique pushes money out of their taxable estate and lets the couple pay the annual taxes on their family's investment income."

???????The whole thing makes for great reading. Check it out if you want some good info on the real curve of Romney's tax returns. As is obvious from the most cursory look at Romney's financial info, he-or his blind trust as he keeps trying to blame it an absolve himself of responsibility-uses every trick in the book to minimize his tax burden.

?????? Nothing could be less true-even for Mitt Romney-than his claim linked above where he claimed that he didn't gain any tax benefit from leaving his money in the Cayman's-among other places like Switzerland, and Bermuda.

??????

Foreclosures and HUD homes - Michigan real estate

If you are looking to buy Michigan real estate you might want to know what is the difference between a foreclosure and a HUD home?? The major difference in a foreclosure and a HUD home is the difference of who owns it.? Banks and or Fannie Mae usually own "foreclosures".? A HUD home that is for sale is a foreclosure too.? But it is owned by HUD.? There is no real difference.?

Both HUD homes and foreclosure listings are a crap shoot on what they look like inside.? They could be nice or they could be a pit.? You never really know until you go inside.

Normally both HUD homes and foreclosure listings give owner occupant buyers first chance to purchase the house.? Both HUD homes and Michigan foreclosure listings take about the same amount of time to close.? Both Michigan foreclosures and HUD homes usually have you sign forms that relieves the sellers of all responsibility and does not allow you to sue them.

So the bottom line is that there is no real difference between a HUD foreclosure and a regular foreclosure other than who owns it.? If you are looking to buy a Michigan foreclosure give me a call and we will get you started.

Stronger Isaac heads to Fla. after drenching Cuba

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tourists in the Florida Keys mustered party faces and locals followed time-worn rituals as the islands prepared for a lashing Sunday from a strengthening Tropical Storm Isaac after it swamped the Caribbean and shuffled plans for the Republican National Convention.

A steady line of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway, the only road linking the Keys, while residents boarded up windows, laid down sandbags and shuttered businesses ahead of the approaching storm. Even Duval Street, Key West's storied main drag, was subdued for a weekend, though not enough to stop music from playing or drinks from being poured.

"We'll just catch every place that's open," said Ted Lamarche, a 48-year-old pizzeria owner visiting Key West to celebrate his anniversary with his wife, Deanna. They walked along on Duval Street, where a smattering of people still wandered even as many storefronts were boarded up and tourists sported ponchos and yellow slickers.

"Category None!" one man shouted in a show of optimism.

Isaac was expected to be at or near hurricane strength by the time its center reached the Keys later Sunday. A hurricane warning was in effect for the Keys and authorities warned tourists to head for the mainland. Meanwhile authorities said a hurricane watch has been issued from the mouth of the Mississippi River ? not including the New Orleans metro area ? eastward to Indian Pass., Fla.

When it hits, winds will be "enough to knock you over," National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

The Keys were bracing storm surge of up to four feet, strong winds and the possibility of tornadoes. The island chain's two airports closed Saturday night and volunteers and some residents began filing into shelters.

"This is a huge inconvenience," said Dale Shelton, a 57-year-old retiree in Key West who was staying in a shelter.

As of 5 a.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 205 miles (330 kms) east-southeast of Key West, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had strengthened in recent hours, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) as it gained strength over open water.

The center said a hurricane hunter plane found the top sustained winds had increased from about 60 mph (95 kph) just hous earlier.

The hurricane center said the storm, which was swirling off the northern coast of Cuba overnight, was expected to move near or over the Florida Keys later in the day or Sunday night. Isaac was then forecast to move over the southeast Gulf of Mexico on Monday. It was moving to the northwest toward the Keys at 18 mph (30 kph).

Forecasters said some more strengthening was expected over the next 48 hours with Isaac set to be at or near hurricane strength upon reaching the Keys. Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 kph) from the center, giving Isaac a broad sweep as it passed.

Among the highest-profile potential targets of the storm was the Republican National Convention, set to begin Monday in Tampa. Forecast models show Isaac likely won't hit Tampa head-on, but it could have lashed the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention was ramping up. A tropical storm warning was extended north of Tampa Bay.

Convention officials said they would convene the convention briefly on Monday, then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm should have passed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

Isaac has already left a trail of suffering across the Caribbean.

The storm's center made landfall Saturday near the far-eastern tip of Cuba, downing trees and power lines. In the picturesque city of Baracoa, the storm surge flooded the seaside Malecon and a block inland, destroying two homes.

At least four people were reported dead in Haiti, including a 10-year-old girl who had a wall fall on her, according to the country's Civil Protection Office. The government also reported "considerable damage" to agriculture and homes. Nearly 8,000 people were evacuated from their houses or quake shelters and more than 4,000 were taken to temporary shelters.

The Grise River in Haiti overflowed north of Port-au-Prince, sending chocolate-brown water spilling through the sprawling shantytown of Cite Soleil, where many people grabbed what possessions they could and carried them on their heads, wading through waist-deep water.

"From last night, we're in misery," said Cite Soleil resident Jean-Gymar Joseph. "All our children are sleeping in the mud, in the rain."

Scores of tents in quake settlements collapsed. In a roadside lot in Cite Soleil, the dozens of tents and shelters provided by international groups after the earthquake were tossed to the ground like pieces of crumpled paper, and the occupants tried to save their belongings.

"They promised they were going to build us a sturdy home and it never came," Jean-Robert Sauviren, an unemployed 63-year-old father of six said as he stood barefoot in the water and held aloft his arms. "Maybe we don't deserve anything."

The Best Gambling Sites ? Last Blogger Standing ... - Online Slots

I know a lot of you out there enjoy online gambling as much as I do. I have personally been doing online gaming for many years now and I have to say that the experience I have had with Slots of Vegas and its sister sites has been amazing. They are always available and the most important thing is that they communicate with you when you have a withdrawal pending. I have always received my withdrawals in a timely manner.

Now on the other hand I have had bad experiences with other online casinos, as a matter of fact I am still waiting for my withdrawal from another online site for over a year now. They sent me half of my winnings after 6 months and I am still waiting for the other half. If this happens to you, my advice is to be persistent and call, call, call and live chat every day.

Without naming the actual group of sites (though I would love to!), if the customer service is based out of the Philippines, I WOULDN?T RECOMMEND PLAYING ON THESE SITES.

There are a lot of online gambling sites out there to play at and I think you just have to be a little selective and very careful when choosing them. Like look at their methods of withdrawal. The sites I have had a good experience with, always offer several payout choices along with overnight checks, the ones that offer only bank wire transfers are ones to be cautious about, there are always hidden fees and you never know when you are going to get your money. Also another tip is to make sure the site is associated with Central Disputes, if you have a problem getting your winnings Central Disputes can help you.

I always enjoy my play at Slots of Vegas, although sometimes their slots seem a little tight (LOL), just like in Vegas, and their team is always there to help you.

Happy Gaming to everyone and let?s Win, Win, Win!!!
