Good news for graduates of music production school, sound engineer school and film school. Audio/visual skills are in increasing demand on cruise lines.
Today?s cruise ships are models of technology ? audio/visual (A/V) technology that is, like the kind you might see in the studios at a film school, audio school or music production school! Whereas twenty years ago, the average on-board A/V crew may have consisted of one or two people, some of today?s cruise ships employ a team of up to thirty videographers, sound technicians and broadcasting specialists. There are even job placement services that specialize in providing cruise ships with qualified A/V professionals.
Cruise ships need grads from music production school, sound engineer school and film school to meet their passengers? needs for:
- communication
- information
- entertainment
Some cruise ships have:
- on-board TV stations, which give information about ports of call, as well as play movies, TV shows and news
- satellite TV
- touchscreen information kiosks for passengers
- interactive TV
- their own in-house TV shows
- video surveillance cameras
- telemedicine conferencing systems connecting onboard medical staff with specialists on land in case of emergency (a case where a degree from a film school, audio school or music production school could be a real life saver!)
On-board digital content producers need to be able to create:
- safety information videos for passengers
- videos about upcoming events and ports of call for passengers
- training videos for crews
- custom-produced videos as souvenirs for passengers
- videos of weddings and other special events
Digital content producers must be able to:
- create graphics
- manipulate video switchers
- create special effects
In fact, some cruise lines use theatrical and cinematic effects to create different ambiences on various parts of the ship throughout the day!
Sound technicians trained at sound engineer school must:
- prepare audio for special events (shows, meetings, bingo, karaoke, telephone conferences, even skating shows in the case of cruise ships with on-board skating rinks)
- prepare audio mixes
- oversee sound systems in public and private rooms, including on-board discos and movie theatres (some of which can seat more than a thousand passengers)

- Stratosphere
- Avid NLE
- Adobe After Effects
- Photoshop
A knowledge of satellite and distribution systems is also useful. Basically, the more that you know, the better. The people who take these jobs must be extremely resourceful: if something breaks down at sea, it?s not possible to quickly call in a repairperson. Even at port, there is not always time for extensive repairs or replacement.
Demand for graduates of music production school, sound engineer school and film school on cruise ships is expected to grow as on-board technology continues to evolve.
