Summer reading program

A summer reading program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Aug. 2 at Puckett Elementary School. All Puckett scholars are invited to prime their reading skills for the upcoming school year. Info: (575) 234-3311.

Calvary Assembly VBS

Calvary Assembly, 1105 N. Pate St., will host Vacation Bible School from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for students entering kindergarten through fifth grade. Register: (575) 885-9152 or www.carlsbadcalvary.com.

First Assembly VBS

First Assembly of God, 1502 W. Mermod St., will host Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. The theme is "I.D. Investigation Destination" featuring snacks, music and games.

Preschool Music Camp

Shooting range closure

The Carlsbad Municipal Shooting Range will be closed to the public Tuesday and Wednesday. A group from University of New Mexico will be performing a contracted survey. It will reopen Thursday.

Announcements

Church concert

Sonrise will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Blodgett Street Baptist Church, 1500 W. Blodgett St. Nursery provided. Free admission.

Medicare help

A representative from NM Aging & Long-Term Services will assist those needing help to reduce premiums, deductibles and co-pays for Medicare Part D Prescription Drug plan and answer questions on Medicaid, Social Security and SSI from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the San Jose Senior Center, 2814 San Jose Blvd. Bring Medicare card and prescription bottles. Road work

Construction has begun on San Jose Boulevard from Diaz Street to Fiesta Drive. This section of road will be closed to through traffic. Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Nov. 22. Info: (575) 885-8838.

State fair artwork

Artwork by 35 Carlsbad Municipal Schools students will be exhibited Sept. 12-23 at the New Mexico State Fair School Arts Display in Albuquerque. An Arts Preview Night will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Articles for veterans

Marine Corps League No. 678 will make a trip Aug. 10 to ToC's Veteran's Hospital to deliver needed articles to veterans. Items needed include toiletries, clean used clothing, books, etc. Info: (575) 457-2058 or (575) 302-2204.

Spelling Bee canceled

The Carlsbad Literacy Program's annual adult Spelling Bee and Silent Auction has been canceled due to a lack of teams

Zoo summer hours

Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park has gone to its summer hours, which will be in effect until Sept. 1. The Visitor Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last entrance to the zoo at 3:30 p.m. Info: (575) 887-5516.

Bypass access change

Traffic needing access to the George Shoup Bypass (NM 200) will need to use the intersection of North Canal Street and CR 206. The intersection at NM 200 and US 62/180 will be closed. The project is scheduled for completion in September.

Hillcrest Baptist VBS

Hillcrest Baptist Church, 605 N. Sixth St., will host Vacation Bible School from 5-8 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2 for preschool through fifth grade. Register: 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. at the church office. Info: (575) 887-1128.

Community Health Fair

A free Community Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Roswell Boys & Girls Club, 200 S. Garden. Blood sugar and cholesterol screenings, height and weight checks, blood pressure and body fat analysis will be offered.

Head Start enrollment

Southeast NM Community Action Corporation Head Start Program, 1915 San Jose Blvd., is accepting applications for the 2013-14 program year for children who have turned 3 or 4 before Sept. 1, 2013. Those who turn 5 before Sept. 1 are not eligible. School supplies

Free summer meals will be available to all kids 18 and under, Monday through Friday through July 31 at these sites: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Beach House and Riverwalk Recreation Complex, 400 Riverwalk Dr.; and from noon to 1 p.m. at Hillcrest, 215 N. Increased patrols

The Artesia Police Department, Eddy County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State Police will conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and seat belt enforcement throughout the month of July. APD will also participate in the 100 Days and Nights of Summer campaign.

Trash, recycling collection

Trash and recycling roll-outs need to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your service days, regardless of what time trash is usually collected. Numerous factors affect the order in which a route is run, so it will not always be at the same time. Returning for containers that were not out on time is not practical.

Parenting workshop

A parenting workshop will meet at 9 a.m. Saturdays Aug. 3-24 at the Eddy County Extension Office, 1304 W. Stevens St. Topics include: stress, alternatives to spanking, communicating and understanding feelings, family morals, ages and stages and praise and self worth.

Bereavement support

Individual and group bereavement support counseling are being offered by Golden Services Home Health, Hospice and Counseling. Info: (575) 885-3082.

Public meeting

There will be a public information meeting on planned improvements at the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex, located within the floodplain at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the Carlsbad Public Library annex, 101 S. Halagueno St.

Auxiliary volunteers

Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers are needed at Carlsbad Medical Center. If you enjoy helping people and can spare a few hours a week, your services would benefit many at the front desk, gift shop, coffee cart or surgery waiting. LMS board meeting reset

The Loving Municipal Schools' Board of Education meeting has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, July 30, in the high school board room. Copies of the agenda will be available 72 hours prior in the central office.

Cowboy Camp

Sammie Hughes Cowboy Camp will be held Aug. 2-4 at Guadalupe Christian Camp, 56 Christian Camp Road, beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday and continuing through a 12:30 p.m. lunch Sunday.

Oil and Gas Summit

Enchilada supper fundraiser

An enchilada supper fundraiser will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Lakeview Christian Home - Northgate, 1905 W. Pierce St. Carry out and drive thru available - follow the signs. Tickets, $9 per plate, are available from Lakeview employees or at the main office.

Kids Kollege

Kids Kollege classes will be held from July 29 to Aug. 2 at ENMU Roswell for ages 8-14.
