Health And Fitness | Eye Strain From Computers - And Other ...

We have gone from a society free of computers to one in which roughly over two billion people actively use them in a very short span of time if we look at it from the long lens of history. With this swelling of computer use, it has led to an increase in eye strain. Eye strain is simply the tiring of the eye from prolonged and intensive use. Eye strain from computers is becoming an ever present and significant complaint voiced in offices and homes across the computer-entrenched world.

A good way to think about eye strain is through the example of exercising. The symptoms associated with eye strain from computers, is very similar in nature. If you work your muscles too hard over an extended period of time, they will let you know by exhibiting complaints. In the case of your eyes: blood shot eyes, headaches, tension aches, and in other ways. Rightfully so, too, because imagine doing eight to twelve hours of dumbbell curls without a break!

Eye strain from computers is referred to now as Computer Vision Syndrome—or shortened to CVS. Some of the more common reasons for the computer-induced fatigue include:

*The two dimensional nature of the reading surface and the fixed positioning of our eyes *Glare from overhead lights in screen *Brightness and contrast levels on screen *Electricity associated with the computer—Electromagnetic chaos is a factor that science is investigating to see if it has a conclusive effect on our eye and overall body health.

Eye strain from computers, is a valid and ramping concern, but computers are not the sole eye-sprain culprit; other daily activities like driving, reading, and watching television also test our eyes. When you take these normal things people do on a daily basis and you add in the factor of enhanced environmental stress, you have further strain.

Consider bright light situations during the day when the sun is at its apex, or the reflection of sun off the snow in winter, natural or artificial glare, and also situations when the light is insufficient and we end up squinting to see. Eye strain from computers is one thing, but there are potential sources of eye strain all around, even the way in which you organize your computer work area (the relation of your body to the computer).

Lifestyle is another factor in holistic body health. If we do not get the correct vitamins and nutrients in our diets, smoking, excessive alcohol; these and other things play a role in our eye health.

Recently doctors have been linking eye strain from computers with vision conditions. Dr. Andrew Weil, a very popular alternative health practitioner, has stated:

"I do think a major reason there is so much nearsightedness is that kids spend an inordinate amount of time staring at blackboards, books, and computer screens."

Dr. Robert Abel Jr. of Healthy Humans claims,

"Constant close work with a computer or blackberry may cause progressive near sightedness. In the last 25 years, the incidence of near sighted adults has gone from 25% to 42%."

Eye strain from computers may be aggravating, but luckily, as the Mayo clinic asserts:

"Eyestrain …usually isn't serious and goes away once you rest your eyes. In some cases, signs and symptoms of eyestrain can indicate an underlying eye condition that needs treatment."

So your body is telling you something when it experiences eyes strain. This is the time to think about preventatives like glasses for computer use and other ideas. When it comes to eye strain from computers, the good news is that you can take steps to lessen the severity of the factors that are leading to the symptoms of this eye strain.
