UK's 'naked rambler' arrested for nudity, again

(AP) ? A British man who has spent most of the past decade naked ? and in jail ? was back behind bars Friday after defying an order to cover up.

Stephen Gough, known as the "Naked Rambler," was arrested Thursday as he left a court in Southampton, southern England, wearing only boots, socks and a knapsack.

A judge had just imposed an order that he must "wear sufficient clothing in public to at least cover his genitalia and buttocks."

The 54-year-old former Royal Marine appeared at the same court Friday, and was ordered detained until a hearing on March 25.

Since 2003 Gough has completed two naked walks the length of Britain, with frequent interruptions for arrests, court appearances and jail time.

Prosecution lawyer Roger Trencher said Friday that Gough "has caused much offense nationwide and he has used a considerable amount of police time in England, Wales and Scotland."

Gough has said he believes nudity is a human right. Defense lawyer Jeffrey Norie-Mille told the court that Gough "believes it is his right not to wear clothes and go about his normal activities in that state of undress."

There is no law in Britain against public nudity. However, there are laws against indecent exposure or behavior likely to cause "harassment, alarm or distress."

Gough has served multiple sentences for appearing nude in public places including courts and an airplane.

He could face up to five years in jail for breaching the no-nudity command, known as an Anti-Social Behavior Order.

Editorial In ACM On Open Access Publishing In Computer Science

Well done! Since you are already doing this, have you thought about signing the Cost of Knowledge [thecostofknowledge.com] petition if you haven't already done? In theory, this will prevent at least Elsevier editors from asking you to review in the first place and hopefully help establish more momentum for change.

In my experience with declining requests to review, I have commonly mentioned access and/or price as concerns for declining and have found some sympathy with various editors. If this becomes more commonplace, hopefully

Humidity could save you from the flu, study says

You may be safer from the flu in a humid room than in a dry one, according to a new study from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To simulate flu transmission in a health care setting, the researchers used "coughing" and "breathing" mannequins that were placed about 6 feet apart. Flu virus particles were released during a "cough," and devices throughout the room and near each "breathing" mannequin's mouth captured the particles. The particles were then collected and tested for their ability to infect human cells.

At humidity levels of 23 percent, 70 to 77 percent of the flu virus particles were still able to cause an infection an hour after the coughing simulation. But when humidity levels were raised to 43 percent, just 14 percent of the virus particles had the ability to infect. Most of the flu particles became inactive 15 minutes after they were released into the humid air. "The virus just falls apart," at high humidity levels, said study researcher John Noti, of the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

High humidity was just as detrimental to small flu particles as large ones. That's important because small flu particles tend to hang in the air for a longer time, while large particles fall to the ground, Noti said.

Researchers already knew that humidity levels affect flu transmission . One reason flu transmission is thought to be lower during the summer months is because of the high humidity. But the new study more directly assessed how humidity levels might affect flu transmission in a health care setting, and also took into account flu particle size, said study researcher Donald Beezhold, also of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

During the summer months, it's pretty easy for indoor humidity levels to be up to 30 to 40 percent, Noti said. But during the winter months it's harder because indoor heating dries out the air, he said. [See Does A Warmer World Mean Less Flu?]

Raising the humidity level of a whole building could be a challenge. But the findings suggest that hospitals might consider raising humidity levels in certain rooms where there might be a high risk for flu transmission, or in rooms with patients who are particularly vulnerable to the flu, such as the intensive care unit (ICU), Noti said.

However, humidity levels should not be too high, because mold starts to grow, Noti said.

The new study is published today (Feb. 27) in the journal PLOS ONE.

Pass it on: The flu virus is less infective at in rooms with higher humidity levels.

Radiation ring around Earth mysteriously appears, then dissipates

Two Van Allen belts temporarily became three, possibly in response to solar activity

Two Van Allen belts temporarily became three, possibly in response to solar activity

RING AROUND THE WORLD

In September, a third ring appeared between the two known Van Allen radiation belts that girdle the Earth thousands of miles above.

High above Earth?s surface float two rings of energetic charged particles, and for about four weeks in September, they were joined by a third. The temporary ring may have formed in response to a solar shock wave that passed by Earth, researchers report online February 28 in Science.

The discovery could force scientists to revisit decades of ideas about the structure of the Van Allen belts, donut-shaped rings of radiation trapped in orbit by the planet?s magnetic field. Those revisions could improve predictions of space weather and scientists? understanding of the space environment near Earth, resulting in better protection for manned and unmanned spacecraft that navigate those areas.

?It's a very important discovery,? says Yuri Shprits of the University of California, Los Angeles, who wasn?t involved in the study. ?Over half a century after the discovery of the radiation belts, this most important region of space where most of the satellites operate presents us with new puzzles.?

Until the discovery, researchers thought the Van Allen belts always contained two zones of high-energy particles: an inner zone made mostly of protons and some electrons, and an outer zone dominated by electrons. A sparsely populated area separates the zones. The belts run from the top of the atmosphere, some 1,000 kilometers above Earth?s surface, to as far as five or six Earth radii from the planet?s surface.

NASA?s early Explorer and Pioneer spacecraft discovered and mapped the belts in 1958. Scientists have since learned that the radiation reservoirs can fluctuate dramatically, especially in the outer zone. Disturbances such as solar storms that disrupt Earth?s magnetic field can cause the outer zone to change shape or to gain or lose particles.

On August 30, NASA launched twin space probes to study the fine details of such disruptions and take a closer look at the belts? composition. The probes repeatedly pass through the belts, completing an orbit about every nine hours. Just days after the probes launched, researchers led by Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado Boulder watched a third ring grow between the two existing belts, and the outer ring to expand. After a month, it disappeared, as did the outer zone, temporarily leaving only one ring. In the following months, the normal two-ring structure gradually returned.

?I'm delighted that observations so early in the program could reveal such new things,? Baker says.

A sun-produced shock wave that passed Earth in early September may have created the third ring, the researchers propose. Another shock wave came through in early October and may have obliterated the outer two rings.

Researchers don?t know how often a third ring forms. ?I would be amazed if in the past 4.5 billion years this hasn't happened before,? Baker says. The probes could provide answers about the third ring?s frequency.

No reports have emerged of satellite damage from the third ring?s brief existence, though operators often do not reveal that information, says Joe Kunches of the National Weather Service?s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Scientists will continue to comb through data from the probes to refine theoretical and observational knowledge of the belts. The probes? findings could also help engineers design spacecraft better protected against the belts? harmful radiation. And forecasters could use real-time data feeds from the probes to give satellite operators better warnings and predictions about the belts? activity. ?That's what we're really excited about,? Kunches says.

Meet the World's Oldest Kindle: A Ferris Wheel for Books

It might be hard to imagine, but there was once a time where thousands upon thousands of books and arguably the sum totally of human knowledge was not readily available at your fingertips. And while it's no Kindle, Agostino Ramelli's 16th century bookwheel was a valiant attempt to make that happen. More »

Perez Hilton announced the birth of his first son yesterday.

?I feel like I?ve always been a dad,? Hilton told told Carson Daly at AMP/Los Angeles Thursday morning. ?I was born to be one and I know I always wanted to have a family of my own and I?m just naturally, privately, the nurturing and protecting type, so this comes as no surprise to my friends and family that I would do this.?

Hilton has yet to announce the baby?s name, but he did reveal his nickname for the infant.

?I?m calling him Sweet Pea from now on. I?m Big Pea and he?s Sweet Pea,? he said.

Though Hilton isn?t ready to tell all about his new son, he said he was touched by the outpouring of support.

?I?m actually really flattered that people care,? he said. ?I thought some people would be interested, but I was really surprised by the reaction yesterday. I mean, I was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter for several hours, or I was told.?

Mother, stepfather of starved Georgia teen get 15-year prison terms

ATLANTA (Reuters) - The mother and stepfather of a Georgia teenager who ended up at a Los Angeles bus terminal last September and told police he had suffered from long-term abuse and starvation were each sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to cruelty charges.

Mitch Comer, 18, was so pale and gaunt when he turned up in Los Angeles that police thought he was only 12 or 13. A grand jury in Paulding County, Georgia, later charged that his mother and stepfather had endangered his health by confining him to a room within their home and denying him medical care.

The mother, Sheila Marie Comer, 40, and stepfather, Paul Matthew Comer, 48, both pleaded guilty on Thursday to child cruelty and false imprisonment charges, said Renee Rockwell, attorney for Sheila Comer.

They had faced more than 100 years in prison each if they had been convicted at trial, Rockwell said.

Comer told police that after removing him from school in the eighth grade, his stepfather shut him in a room and fed him only small amounts of food. When he turned 18, his stepfather gave him $200 and put him on a bus with a list of homeless shelters he had located on the Internet.

Rockwell described the family as deeply religious and said when she visited the couple's home shortly after their arrest in September, "there was plenty of food in the house."

Paulding County District Attorney Dick Donovan said little of that food was given to Mitch Comer. "He lived on cereal," Donovan said.

The Los Angeles police who encountered Mitch Comer said he was just over 5 feet tall and weighed only 87 pounds (39 kg).

Avoiding a trial will allow Mitch Comer and his two sisters to be spared from having to "relive the horrors that they went through," Donovan said.

Donovan told Reuters he had no explanation for the way the couple treated Mitch Comer.

"I don't know what makes people mean like that," he said. "I just know that they are."

As part of the plea agreement, the Comers' assets will be sold and the money placed in a trust, with half going to Mitch Comer and the remaining half to his two younger sisters when they turn 25, Rockwell said.

She described the couple's assets as "substantial." Paul Comer had a ninth-grade education but was a successful appliance repairman, the attorney for his wife said.
