Pakistani police arrest former president Musharraf

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani police on Friday arrested former President Pervez Musharraf and presented him in court a day after a judge had canceled his bail in one of several cases he faces relating to his time in power.

The Islamabad High Court had ordered Musharraf's arrest on Thursday, but the former military ruler quickly left the building and returned to his farmhouse compound outside the Pakistani capital.

But on Friday, Islamabad police spokesman Naeem Iqbal said officers had formally arrested Musharraf and produced him before a magistrate in court.

Following that court appearance, Musharraf went back to his residence where he was under house arrest, a person close to him said.

Musharraf resigned as president of Pakistan in 2008 and went into exile in London and Dubai. He returned to Pakistan last month under heavy security to fight a series of court cases against him and run in upcoming elections.

But so far, his return does not seem to be going according to plan. Earlier this week, Pakistani election officials barred Musharraf from running for a seat in parliament, a decision his lawyer has said he will challenge.
