Dan Rogerson is pressing for a new agreement between insurers and the Government to make sure that local people aren?t left without insurance and with uninsurable houses.
Following the extensive flooding in Cornwall and the South West this weekend reports have suggested that talks between the government and the Association of British Insurers to secure a new agreement on affordable flood insurance have reached a crisis point.
Mr Rogerson has been lobbying Environment Ministers over the past few months to secure a new deal to make sure that everyone has access to affordable cover against flooding.
Dan also questioned Flooding Minister Richard Benyon recently during a hearing of the influential Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Select Committee in the House of Commons. Mr Rogerson urged the Minister to make sure that the new system is fair and affordable for everyone, and reduces the cost of premiums where individuals and communities have taken their own steps to prevent the risk of flooding to their homes.
The Committee has said that is it ?deeply worrying? that a new agreement with the insurance industry has not yet been reached with less than a year to go until the existing agreement expires.
Commenting, Dan Rogerson MP said:
?The past few days show just how vital it is that the Insurance Industry and the Government get back around the table and act quickly and decisively on flood insurance.
?Reports about the talks being in crisis point are extremely worrying. The current agreement between government and insurers runs out next year ? homeowners and businesses across Cornwall need to know that they will still be able to get affordable flood insurance cover in the future, wherever they are.
?I accept that small rural communities are not going to get large government-funded flood defences to cover a few properties, so it is also vital that where people have invested in their own flood protection measures for their homes, that this is properly reflected in their insurance premiums.?
Glenton Brown, Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Tintagel added:
?I am pleased that Dan Rogerson is on the ball and trying to get a fair deal for local people when it comes to flood insurance cover. It is becoming an increasing problem and concern for many households, as people in flood zones are often unable to find satisfactory cover. I?m only too aware of their fears following the 2004 floods, including Boscastle in my division.?
Graham Unsworth, a resident of Newmills near Poundstock said:
?When our property was damaged in 2004 our insurers were supportive and dealt with our claim, efficiently, courteously and promptly. The cover was arranged through a broker and since then our insurance premium has increased, together with an increase in flood damage excess. We have always maintained our level of cover, being aware that any change could result in the insurers removing the flood risk from the policy.
?We are pleased that Dan is putting forward a strong case on behalf of all his constituents living in flood risk properties in north Cornwall. His call for continuation of insurance for these properties at affordable prices is both reasonable and commendable. If insurers refuse to insure properties in flood risk areas this will adversely affect a lot of people living in this area.?
