Local Business Owner Receives International Recognition

Mary Verdin is a finalist for Stevie Awards? Female Entrepreneur of the Year

Local business owner Mary Verdin was named a finalist today for Female Entrepreneur of the Year in the 9th annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business, and will ultimately be a Gold, Silver or Bronze Stevie Award winner in the program.

Verdin is the owner and president of a local marketing company of the same name. Verdin?s employees secretly nominated her for the award in the Business Services category small businesses.

This is a significant achievement for Verdin. Receiving the award means that independent judges agreed that she is worthy of international recognition.

?Mary is an amazing person to work with and work for,? said Ashlee Akers, Verdin vice president, client services. ?She has built this company from the ground up and we?re all so proud to be a part of it. We wanted to find some way to honor her and thank her for being a wonderful role model for women in business, and for being such a strong pillar in our own lives and in the community.?

The Stevie Awards for Women in Business honor women executives, entrepreneurs and the companies they run ? worldwide. The Stevie Awards have been hailed as the world?s premier business awards. More than 1,200 entries were submitted this year for consideration in more than 90 categories, including Executive of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Women Helping Women, and Communications Campaign of the Year. All finalists were publicly listed today on www.steviewawards.com/women.

?We?re very excited about this year?s Finalists in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business,? said Michael Gallagher, founder and president of the Stevie Awards. ?The judges have told me that they think this is the best and most inspiring crop of nominees we?ve ever had. We look forward to seeing the judges? final decisions.?

Verdin not only founded her company in 2003, but she has helped it grow from a one-person shop to a team of 10 professional and creative employees. What started in a tiny office with a card table and a Mac Notebook has now become one of the go-to marketing and PR agencies on the Central Coast.

In the last year, Verdin led her team into a new era with a complete rebrand of her company. The company changed its name from Verdin Marketing Ink to just Verdin and created a new sleek look and feel that will help it grow into the future.

With a passion for community service, Verdin donates marketing services, money and time to local nonprofit organizations, and helps businesses thrive here in San Luis Obispo. In fact, under her direction, the agency has provided more than $56,000 in donations and in-kind marketing and public relations services in the last year alone.

Verdin encourages her team to volunteer for community organizations, and she certainly leads by example. She donates countless hours to organizations like the Women?s Legacy Fund, Rotary, Leadership San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, Economic Vitality Corporation, San Luis Obispo Community Foundation, and other local organizations. She was the keynote speaker at The Tribune?s Top 20 Under 40 Awards ceremony earlier this year, and is currently the Public Relations Chair for Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. She is also a member of the Advisory Council to the Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County.

Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word ?crowned,? Gold, Silver and Bronze Stevie Award winners will be announced during a gala event at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York on Friday, Nov. 9.
