Burd Ford employees taken hostage by trio of suspects

Employees at a northeast Indianapolis car dealership were taken hostage over the weekend and authorities are now looking for the trio responsible.

Three men took over the Burd Ford showroom looking for cash Saturday right around closing time.

Sales Manager John Reynolds said it isn't usual for the dealership to have cash, but Saturday was different.

"We took in a bunch of money and somebody had to see it."

Jon Parson, another sales manager remembers the three coming in, "pulled out his gun and said everyone to the back."

The robbers walked the group of five employees to the theater in the back of the building, held them hostage and demanded to see the safe.

Parsons volunteered to show them where it was.

"He made me get on my knees. Said one last time I'm going to tell you to open that safe and at that point I told him pretty much you're going to have to shoot me because I knew no one there knew how to open that safe."

There is only one person who knows the combination to the safe at Burd's. That one person was not at work on Saturday at the time of the robbery.

After lots of threats and demanding to get the money, the would-be robbers made the employees unplug the surveillance system before leaving. That's when Reynolds called 911. Lawrence Police quickly arrived.

While the trio made a point to unplug the cameras, they only did so after those cameras were able to capture their images. Those pictures are now being enhanced and are expected to be released Wednesday.

Parson said it's just part of what's being used to find the men.

"From my understanding there was a lot of stuff they left behind as far as prints and stuff like that."

Reynolds said he is just thankful everyone is okay.

"You think it lasted for a long long time but it was 17 minutes."

Reynolds said it's 17 minutes that could have been very different.

"It hits us every now and then. What if, what if, what if? Could have turned out totally different."

If you have any information about the robbery, call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
